jennifer aniston is fed up

jennifer aniston made internet headlines last week for calling out (challenging) on-line gossip (rumors, hearsay). after her belly appeared slightly larger when she was photographed on the beach in june, various internet sources speculated that she might be pregnant.

in an editorial for the huffington post, aniston states

i am not pregnant. what i am is fed up.

fed up means she is tired of and angry about this speculation. she doesn’t want to hear it anymore. in fact, according to aniston this is the bajillionth time a media outlet has floated the idea (suggested) that she is pregnant. bajillion is not a real number.  it just means a lot.

the friends star wrote that the media attention she receives

reflects the warped way we calculate a woman’s worth.

worth is value. warped is distorted.  in the sentence above it refers to ideas or opinions. in  video below from the adam sandler movie that’s my boy, warped refers to a tatoo.

jennifer explains

the message that girls are not pretty unless they’re incredibly thin, that they’re not worthy of our attention unless they look like a supermodel or an actress on the cover of a magazine is something we’re all willingly buying into.

unless means except if; it presents a condition, in this case that girls must be thin/look like supermodels in order to be considered pretty. worthy (similar to worth) means merit or deserve. williingly indicates that society doesn’t resist. buy into means believe.

aniston says the public is williingly buying into this tabloid bullshit.

jennifer does not believe tabloid practices (paparzzi, sensational journalism) are going to disappear. instead she asks that the public reconsider their mentality and habits in relation to the gossip on the internet.

what can change is our awareness and reaction to the toxic messages buried within these seemingly harmless stories served up as truth and shaping our ideas of who we are. we get to decide how much we buy into what’s being served up, and maybe some day the tabloids will be forced to see the world through a different, more humanized lens because consumers have just stopped buying the bullshit.

awareness is consciousness. seemingly means it appears that way. harmless is the opposite of dangerous.  get to indicates the public has the power, the opportunity. see the world through a different lens means find another perspective. bullshit is lies.

full disclosure (sharing all the facts):  i’m not really a jennifer aniston fan.  rachel on friends never meant shit to me (was important) and her movies are mostly cheesy (superficial, overly sentimental) romantic comedies. but i did like her guest appearance on 30 rock as liz lemon’s sexy, crazy, charming ex-roommate.

is jennifer aniston right? does the attention she gets from on-line gossip represent a warped understanding of women and their worth? share your feelings under leave a reply.
