this funny conversation between louis c.k. and conan o’brien has been analyzed previously on richyrocks.com as an excellent example for understanding the idiom take for granted. additionally, c.k. uses like or go (rather than say) several times to introduce dialogue. this is common in spoken english, especially when telling a story.
for example, at :10 he goes
when i read things like the foundations of capitalism are shattering, i’m like, “maybe we need that.”
later, at 2:50, he criticizes the sensitive attitudes of air travelers
they’re like, “it was the worst day of my life.”
do we take the miracle of flight and other technological comforts for granted?
at 2:15 he shares a story about a frustrated passenger on one of his flights
[the airline] apologizes the internet’s not working and the guy next to me goes, “pssh this is bullshit.”
bullshit in this instance means a bad deal, injustice.
and at 1:05 describes people’s attitudes towards money in the past
when you ran out of money you’d just go “well, i can’t do any more things now.”
run out of refers to when all of a resource, money in this case, is gone.
are u like,”the technology of our times is fascinating!”? or do u always go,”i’m so pissed off! my shit doesn’t work. damn it!”?
