this article<\/a> by carolina paiz<\/strong>, a producer and writer for the show, elaborates on how the issue was researched<\/em><\/strong> (investigated) and includes personal content based on paiz’s own immigrant experience. she describes the experience of telling prisoner stories and how immigration detention compares…<\/p>\n

for the past seven years, our writers, our cast, and our crew have been immersed in the world of prisons. federal. state. private. we\u2019ve toured them. we\u2019ve<\/em> read<\/em> about them. we\u2019ve listened as former<\/em> inmates shared their stories, cracking open<\/em> their pain<\/em> and revealing the scars<\/em> an unjust justice system had inflicted upon them. we should have known<\/em> immigration detention would be the same. it\u2019s run by the same fucking<\/em> people.<\/h4>\n

we hoped our immigration storylines this season would play a similar role in humanizing the immigrant experience to those who see us as subhuman. maybe I was naive<\/em> to think this. but I have to believe that stories amount to<\/em> something… while stories can help spark<\/em> change, it\u2019s up to<\/em> all of us to take that spark<\/em> and start a fucking<\/em> fire.<\/h4>\n

naive<\/strong><\/em><\/a> means not sophisticated<\/em>, lacking<\/a><\/em> experience or <\/em>wisdom<\/a><\/em>. amount to<\/strong><\/em> means produce<\/em>, become important<\/em>, or successful. <\/em>spark <\/strong><\/em>as a verb means generate<\/em>. as a noun spark<\/em><\/strong><\/a> is a particle of fire<\/em>. up to<\/em><\/strong> means it’s our responsibility<\/em>.<\/p>\n

for years, I thought I was making tv solely<\/em> for an american audience, somehow forgetting how i myself was changed by american entertainment. how tv helped shape<\/em> my own values. only after having written on this season of orange<\/i> do i remember that it will cross borders. that it will provide people in countries like guatemala a real glimpse<\/em> into the promised land<\/em>, a look inside our detention centers and the corporate<\/em> greed<\/em> and institutionalized xenophobia<\/em> that fuel<\/em> them….<\/h4>\n

season 7 gives viewers a <\/em>glimpse<\/em><\/u> at the inside of an immigrant detention center<\/em><\/h5>\n

most important of all, carolina holds the u.s. accountable<\/em><\/strong> (responsible) for their part in creating the environments that immigrants want to escape from.<\/p>\n

our guatemalan civil war began (as many wars do) with a u.s.-led coup<\/em> against our democratically<\/em> elected president. the conflict that ensued<\/em> was fueled<\/em> by an oppressive, u.s.-backed military that grew<\/em> increasingly violent against civilians, especially the indigenous majority who lived in the countryside. by the time<\/em> the war ended almost four decades later, 200,000 people had died<\/em>, leaving the country ravaged<\/em>. ripe<\/em> for gangs, narcos, and corruption. two decades later, we\u2019re still picking up the pieces<\/em>….the current migration patterns into the US are inextricably<\/em> linked to this historical context. I\u2019d call it karma, except it\u2019s the guatemalan people who keep getting the shit end of the stick<\/em>.<\/h4>\n
