it’s been a good year for el tri in the u.s., but the success is part of a long-term trend that started several decades ago<\/p>\n

hefty<\/em> attendance and ratings in friendlies<\/em> this year spanning<\/em> from california to georgia are just the latest in a line of decades-old<\/em> examples showing that el tri<\/i> long ago secured not only a major market of soccer hearts and minds<\/em> in the home of its concacaf rival but with it, a sense of de facto<\/i> american citizenship.<\/h4>\n

<\/strong><\/em> means big<\/em>. in football, a friendly<\/em><\/strong> is an exhibition match that is not part of an official tournament<\/em>. span<\/em><\/strong> means extend<\/em>. decades-old<\/em><\/strong> means this type of attendance has been happening for several decades<\/em>. el tri<\/strong><\/em><\/span> is a nickname for mexico’s national football team. tri is an abbreviation for tri-color<\/em>, in other words, the red white and green of mexico. <\/em><\/strong> is used to talk about support<\/em>. de facto<\/em><\/strong> means , not officially but in practice<\/em>.<\/p>\n

despite<\/em> the concentration in the southwest<\/em> region, mexico hasn’t shied away from<\/em> staging<\/em> friendlies<\/em> in places such as<\/em> charlotte, north carolina; seattle; denver; and nashville, tennessee, in recent years. in the salt lake city suburb of sandy, utah, 20,213 turned out<\/em> for Mexico’s 3-3 tie with trinidad and tobago in 2015. <\/span><\/h4>\n

<\/strong><\/em> means regardless of<\/em>. the southwest<\/em><\/strong> has always been the most mexican region of the u.s.– it belonged to mexico until the mid 1800s. <\/em><\/strong> means avoid<\/em>. stage<\/strong><\/em> means organize<\/em>, hold<\/em>. such as<\/em><\/strong><\/a> is used to present examples. <\/em><\/strong>, a phrasal verb, means attend<\/em>. turnout<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(not used here) \u00a0is the eqivalent noun. it’s a synonym for attendance<\/em>.<\/p>\n

gerardo “tata” martino earned<\/em> his first win with mexico. a roster<\/em> of stars valued at more than $155 million led by hirving “chucky” lozano and javier “chicharito” hernandez, household names<\/em> to many u.s. hispanic fans, helped carry the day<\/em>. surrounding them was a scene that has become commonplace<\/em> at u.s. stadiums: thousands of young, american-born and bicultural fans speaking english, decked out<\/em> in mexico’s red, white and green gear<\/em>, chanting<\/em> songs and accompanied by spanish-speaking relatives<\/em> from home.<\/h4>\n

growing up<\/em> in a mexican household<\/em>, u inherit<\/em> a lot of your family’s passions and become so involved with that culture that it becomes part of who u are as a person. a big part of that is following and supporting the mexican national team.<\/h4>\n

the mexican federation, with corporate sponsors that include adidas, coca-cola, the home depot<\/em>, at&t, wells fargo and allstate, leaves no stone unturned<\/em> in its efforts to capitalize on<\/em><\/strong> opportunities in the u.s.<\/h4>\n

depot<\/em><\/strong> is pronounced differently in the u.s. and mexico. in mexico, the t<\/em> is pronounced, in the u.s. it’s silent. leave no stone unturned<\/em><\/strong> means the mexican federation explores every option exhaustively<\/em>, they look under every rock (figuratively) for money making opportunities. capitalize on<\/em><\/strong> means take advantage of<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n
