there was an incident at an nba game last week when russell\u00a0westbrook<\/strong><\/a> and the oklahoma city thunder<\/strong> <\/span>were playing the nuggets<\/span><\/strong> in denver<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

russell westbrook had to get out his dad<\/i> hat<\/i> in the middle of a game and lecture<\/i> a kid and his father about appropriate<\/i> and respectful fan behavior<\/i>.<\/h4>\n

during the third quarter, after a foul call against the thunder, he came close to the fans in the front row and…<\/p>\n

[a] kid (presumably a nuggets fan) tapped<\/em> or lightly pushed westbrook just after the ref<\/i><\/strong> blew the whistle<\/i>. westbrook turned around <\/i>and stared the kid down<\/i> for a few seconds before going<\/i> over to talk to him and his dad.<\/h4>\n

is\u00a0a light hit<\/em>. blew<\/strong><\/i> is the irregular past tense of blow<\/i><\/strong>. when the ref blows the whistle<\/em>, the game pauses. turn around<\/strong><\/em><\/a> means face the other direction<\/em>. stare down<\/em><\/strong> <\/a>means look at intensely<\/em>. going<\/strong><\/em> is in the ing form<\/strong><\/a> because it comes after before<\/strong><\/em>, which is a preposition<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

get angry<\/strong><\/em> describes the process of going from not angry to angry<\/em>. keep your cool<\/em> <\/strong>means not getting angry<\/em>.<\/p>\n

later russ shared what he told the dad of the kid who touched him and commented on the situation in general<\/p>\n

just letting him know<\/em>, you’ve just got to<\/em> control your kids…for all fans though<\/em>, there’s too much leeway<\/em> for the fans to be able to touch the players and get away with it<\/em>, and then u can’t react and do the things that we need to do to protect ourselves….but there has to be some type of rule or some type of boundaries<\/em> set that u can’t allow that.<\/h4>\n

\u00a0means inform<\/em>. you’ve got to<\/strong><\/em> is the have got structure<\/strong><\/a>. it’s the equivalent of u have to<\/em>. though<\/a><\/strong><\/em>, similar to but<\/em>, contrasts<\/em> russ’s ideas about kids’ behavior and the behavior of all fans. leeway<\/em><\/strong> is freedom<\/em>. too much<\/em><\/strong><\/a> means the leeway<\/em> is excessive<\/em>. \u00a0get awa<\/em>y<\/em> with<\/em><\/strong><\/a> means there are no consequences<\/em>. boundaries<\/em><\/strong><\/a> are limits<\/em>, specifically a division<\/em> between the players and the fans.<\/p>\n

basketball lends itself<\/em> to this kind of player-fan interaction more than any other pro sport simply due to<\/em> the design of the court and the stands<\/em>….with the ability to get close to the players (close enough to actually<\/em> touch them), what westbrook is asking for isn\u2019t nuts<\/em>.<\/h4>\n

lends itself<\/em><\/strong> means the circumstances are right for that<\/em>. due to<\/strong><\/em><\/a> is because of<\/em>. stands<\/em><\/strong><\/a> are where fans sit at a sporting event<\/em>. actually<\/em><\/strong><\/a> means really<\/em>. it is NOT the same as actualmente<\/em> in spanish. nuts<\/strong> <\/em><\/a>means crazy.<\/p>\n

i agree westbrook isn’t nuts<\/em> to talk about this issue.\u00a0a fan in scotland demonstrated this week, more graphically, that football also lends itself<\/em> to potential unwanted interaction between players and fans.<\/p>\n
