{"id":848,"date":"2015-05-12T22:58:49","date_gmt":"2015-05-13T04:58:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/richyrocks.com\/?p=848"},"modified":"2019-04-09T21:41:19","modified_gmt":"2019-04-10T03:41:19","slug":"we-used-a-robot","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/richyrocks.com\/coolenglish\/we-used-a-robot\/","title":{"rendered":"we used a robot. we used a robot."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>a few months ago i heard and read about an incident  a town had to wait a week for the government to come and remove a truck full of nuclear waste that crashed\u00a0in a nearby field. it seemed like a can&#8217;t miss idea\u00a0for a youtube video. it&#8217;s called <em><strong>we used a robot<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"we used a robot\" width=\"758\" height=\"426\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zqgmdUooEOg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>first of all, i have talked at some length here on richyrocks.com about the structures \u00a0and . \u00a0the title of this vid is NOT an application of either one of those but of\u00a0the verb <em><strong>use<\/strong><\/em> (utilize). \u00a0it&#8217;s also important\u00a0to remember, in particular if u are a native spanish speaker, when u are talking about the clothes u have (or had) on, the typical\u00a0verb to use is  (irregular&#8211;wore, worn), NOT\u00a0use.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/h4>\n<p>(on the vid at :12) refers to video. the name comes from the early days of movie making when film was\u00a0measured in <em>feet<\/em> (one <em>foot<\/em> is 12 <a href=\"https:\/\/richyrocks.com\/coolenglish\/inch-by-inch-pound-for-pound\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>inches<\/em><\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>hold<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0(irregular&#8211;held, held) is a common\u00a0verb to use\u00a0in reference to a meeting or event happening, in this case, a press conference.<\/p>\n<h6><a href=\"https:\/\/richyrocks.com\/coolenglish\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/dog-scooping-poop.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-880\" src=\"https:\/\/richyrocks.com\/coolenglish\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/dog-scooping-poop.jpg\" alt=\"a dog scooping poop\" width=\"270\" height=\"187\" \/><\/a><\/h6>\n<h6><em>a dog <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">scooping up <\/span>his own poop<\/em><\/h6>\n<p><em><strong>scoop up<\/strong><\/em> (:43)\u00a0is similar to <em>pick up;\u00a0take off the ground or out of something.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>(1:05) is a phrasal verb with many applications. in this context it&#8217;s about\u00a0a <em>result;\u00a0<\/em>similar to <em> <\/em>or  the robot&#8217;s effort to recover the radioactive material was a success in the eyes of the nuclear security secretary.<\/p>\n<p>the final question of the press conference (1:10) is<\/p>\n<h4>local officials have <em>complained<\/em> that they were <em>kept in the dark<\/em>  this <em>ordeal<\/em>. \u00a0any response to that?<\/h4>\n<p><em><strong>keep in the dark<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0is an expression that means <em>intentionally not given information<\/em> and anis a<em> terrible situation<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h6><a href=\"https:\/\/richyrocks.com\/coolenglish\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Complainingpenguins_249x167.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-882\" src=\"https:\/\/richyrocks.com\/coolenglish\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Complainingpenguins_249x167.jpg\" alt=\"a complaint desk operated by penguins\" width=\"280\" height=\"188\" srcset=\"https:\/\/richyrocks.com\/coolenglish\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Complainingpenguins_249x167.jpg 249w, https:\/\/richyrocks.com\/coolenglish\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Complainingpenguins_249x167-210x140.jpg 210w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 280px) 100vw, 280px\" \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/richyrocks.com\/coolenglish\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/compliant-rubber-stamp-three-dimensional-illustration-word-43258325.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-883\" src=\"https:\/\/richyrocks.com\/coolenglish\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/compliant-rubber-stamp-three-dimensional-illustration-word-43258325.jpg\" alt=\"compliant stamp\" width=\"244\" height=\"189\" \/><\/a><\/h6>\n<h6><em>complaint &amp;\u00a0compliant\u00a0<\/em><\/h6>\n<p><em><strong>complain<\/strong> (express a negative feeling)<\/em>\u00a0and especially\u00a0its noun equivalent,  are often confused with <em><strong>compliant<\/strong><\/em>, the adjective used at :25 in a question for the secretary about whether or not they <em>followed international guidelines, rules or standards<\/em> to remove the nuclear waste.<\/p>\n<p>are there any other expressions used in the vid that are new to u?
