an interesting perspective on the idiom <\/i><\/strong> was revealed during a recent interview with guy pearce<\/strong> on the empire film podcast<\/strong>. pearce was asked if he thinks viewers binge watch his netflix<\/strong><\/span> series the innocents<\/strong><\/i>. pearce answered<\/p>\n

people do, but I don’t think netflix like the term ”. when we did the promotion for this [the innocents] in the [united] states, we were strictly sort of<\/i> instructed beforehand<\/i> not to talk about ‘binge watching’.<\/h4>\n

sort of<\/a><\/strong><\/i> means kind of<\/i>, in a way<\/i>. beforehand <\/strong><\/i>is another way to say before.<\/i><\/p>\n

the term “binge watching” has been around for several years now, with its widespread<\/i> usage primarily rooted<\/i> in the popularity of streaming services such as<\/i> netflix, hulu, and amazon prime. the phrase also reflects the most common mindset<\/i> associated with how people view streaming services.<\/h4>\n

widespread<\/a><\/strong><\/i> means in many places<\/i>. rooted<\/a><\/i><\/strong> indicates that binge watching’s popularity as a phrase is directly a result of<\/i> the popularity of streaming services. such as<\/i><\/strong> is used to present examples. mindset<\/a><\/strong><\/i> is mentality, a way of thinking<\/i>.<\/p>\n

boettcher elaborates on some research that netflix did a few years ago and provides a satisfactory definition for binge watching<\/i>.<\/p>\n

in 2014, netflix surveyed<\/i> viewers to find that 61% of those surveyed<\/i> binge watch regularly. the same study found that 73% of the people surveyed defined binge watching as “watching between 2-6 episodes of the same TV show in one sitting<\/i>.” while the term “binge” at one point was primarily associated with binge drinking or binge eating, it has quickly become associated with netflix and company, which makes sense<\/i> given that new seasons for the vast majority<\/i> of their TV shows are made available all at once, thus<\/i> allowing people to watch all the episodes in one or two sittings<\/i>.<\/h4>\n

a survey<\/i><\/strong>, like a poll<\/i> is a group of questions asked to collect information<\/i>. a sitting<\/strong><\/i> is a period of time seated doing a specific activity<\/i>. make sense<\/a><\/strong><\/i> means easy to understand.<\/i> a vast majority<\/i><\/strong> is a really big<\/i> majority. means in that way<\/i>.<\/p>\n

taking the information that netflix gathered<\/a><\/i><\/strong> (collected, brought together) from the survey into account, the article speculates about why netflix would have this opinion, but doesn’t really reach a conclusion.<\/p>\n

regardless<\/i>, it is interesting to see the streaming service warn its actors against using language that is so ingrained<\/i> in the conversation surrounding<\/i> netflix.<\/h4>\n

the rationale<\/strong><\/i> (logic) behind netflix’s position?<\/p>\n

with the phrase’s origins coming from places of addictive struggles<\/i> such as<\/i> binge drinking and binge eating, avoiding<\/i> the phrase does make some sense<\/i>.<\/h4>\n

struggles<\/a><\/strong><\/i> are serious problems<\/i>. avoid<\/strong><\/i> means not use<\/i>.<\/p>\n

so there are some justifications for not using binge<\/i> in reference to watching netflix…<\/p>\n

yet<\/i>, the conversation around the streaming giant has become so prevalent in discussions of television series and movies that the phrase “bingeing” may be more associated<\/i> with the new season of luke cage<\/strong> than eating or drinking in peoples’ minds.<\/h4>\n

yet<\/a><\/i><\/strong> means anyway<\/i>, nevertheless<\/a><\/i>. may be associated<\/strong><\/i> is <\/strong>. it is implied that the <\/u>public<\/u><\/u> associates bingeing with streaming more than drinking or eating (or using cocaine), but the public<\/em> isn’t used as a subject. in the phrase may be associated,<\/i> be<\/i><\/strong> is an auxiliary, associated<\/strong><\/i> is a past participle.<\/p>\n
