All Gods children got rhythm.\" width=\"758\" height=\"426\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/di-a-jf1c6g?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>got<\/strong><\/em> is a reduction of , which is an alternative to <em>have<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/richyrocks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/a-day-at-the-races-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7491 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/richyrocks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/a-day-at-the-races-1-156x300.jpg\" alt=\"a day at the races movie poster\" width=\"156\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/richyrocks.com\/coolenglish\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/a-day-at-the-races-1-156x300.jpg 156w, https:\/\/richyrocks.com\/coolenglish\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/a-day-at-the-races-1.jpg 322w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 156px) 100vw, 156px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>given the reputation the academy awards has had for (not having) racial diversity in recent years and the racist history of the u.s., i was surprised to discover that the performance was indeed nominated for an <strong>academy award for dance direction<\/strong> at the  in march 1938.\u00a0but <em><strong>a day at the races<\/strong><\/em> didn&#8217;t win.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/h4>\n<p>1938 was the last time the award for dance direction was ever given at the <strong>oscars<\/strong> (academy awards). i expected the rest of the nominees for dance direction \u00a0to be evidence that while god&#8217;s children may all have rhythm, there are levels. definitely none of the other entries, including the winner,\u00a0 had the heart and energy of the lindy hop&#8211;a day at the races definitely got <em>ripped off<\/em> (they should have won) but i did find some fun facts and some useful vocabulary related to the other nominees.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-7492\" src=\"http:\/\/richyrocks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/gosling-berkeley-300x263.jpg\" alt=\"ryan gosling and busby berkeley\" width=\"300\" height=\"263\" srcset=\"https:\/\/richyrocks.com\/coolenglish\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/gosling-berkeley-300x263.jpg 300w, https:\/\/richyrocks.com\/coolenglish\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/gosling-berkeley.jpg 557w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<h5><em><strong>lala land <\/strong>star ryan gosling is working on a project where he would play iconic choreographer and director busby berkeley. (thefilmexperience.net)<\/em><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>varsity show<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0is a movie about students on a college campus working to prepare and <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/put-on-def\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><em>put on<\/em><\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(perform) an annual stage production. this scene was directed by <strong>busby berkeley<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/richyrocks.com\/coolenglish\/pena-nieto-invited-trump-to-los-pinos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em><strong>renowned<\/strong><\/em><\/a>\u00a0(famous) for his choreography of big dance <strong><em>numbers<\/em><\/strong> (performances) on stage and in films.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Busby Berkeley Finale | Varsity Show | Warner Archive\" width=\"758\" height=\"426\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PKIq_AaJBWs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>varsity<\/strong><\/em> is usually used to refer to <em>the first team representing a university or high school in competition<\/em>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>swing is here to stay<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0a song from the movie <strong><em>ali baba goes to town<\/em><\/strong> probably overestimated the long-term popularity of the musical style  (<em><strong>here to stay<\/strong><\/em> indicates <em>permanence<\/em>) but <strong>jeni le gon<\/strong>&#8216;s tap dancing and dance moves in general, particularly the <strong><em>toe stands<\/em><\/strong>, are spectacular.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Swing Is Here To Stay (1937)\" width=\"758\" height=\"569\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NrnLfXiIAOQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>the main actor in the scene is <strong>eddie cantor<\/strong>, a popular song and dance man of his time.\u00a0 most modern movie audiences, at least in the u.s.,\u00a0 would not be able to <strong><em>get past<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(ignore, accept) his appearing in <em><strong>blackface<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0(his face painted black).\u00a0 it was a popular mechanism of comedy 80 years ago but today it&#8217;s widely seen as an artifact of american racism.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-7513\" src=\"http:\/\/richyrocks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Captura-de-pantalla-2018-03-09-a-las-00.33.43-300x214.png\" alt=\"jeni le bon doing a toe stand in ali baba goes to town\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" srcset=\"https:\/\/richyrocks.com\/coolenglish\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Captura-de-pantalla-2018-03-09-a-las-00.33.43-300x214.png 300w, https:\/\/richyrocks.com\/coolenglish\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Captura-de-pantalla-2018-03-09-a-las-00.33.43.png 576w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<h5><em>jeni le gon executing a\u00a0<\/em><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">toe stand<\/span><\/em><em>\u00a0while performing to <strong>swing is here to stay<\/strong><\/em><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>americans in the 1930s obviously thought <em><strong>tap dancing<\/strong><\/em> was <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/the-shit-def\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><em>the shit<\/em><\/strong><\/a> (really cool). the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/highlight-definition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em><strong>highlight<\/strong><\/em><\/a>\u00a0(best part) of the finale of <em><strong>ready, willing and able<\/strong><\/em> is this tap dance on a <strong><em>typewriter<\/em><\/strong>. (remember typewriters?)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Ruby Keeler Taps on Giant Typewriter, 1937\" width=\"758\" height=\"569\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hV2ZwftnaHg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>ready,willing and able <\/strong><\/em>is an idiom that means <em>totally prepared<strong>. <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/willing-def\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">willing <\/a><\/strong><\/em>by itself means<em> with a desire to do.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>thin ice<\/strong><\/em>, a movie featuring\u00a0 ice skating legend\u00a0<strong>sonja henie<\/strong> and <strong><em>waikiki wedding<\/em><\/strong> starring <strong>bing crosby<\/strong>, one of the most famous american singers of the day, were also nominated.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-7493\" src=\"http:\/\/richyrocks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/sonia-henie-on-thin-ice-201x300.jpg\" alt=\"on thin ice movie poster\" width=\"201\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/richyrocks.com\/coolenglish\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/sonia-henie-on-thin-ice-201x300.jpg 201w, https:\/\/richyrocks.com\/coolenglish\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/sonia-henie-on-thin-ice.jpg 302w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 201px) 100vw, 201px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>and the winner was&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;..<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>a damsel in distress<\/strong><\/em> for this scene that recreates a <a href=\"https:\/\/richyrocks.com\/coolenglish\/burn-down\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><em>fun house<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, a traditional attraction at an <a href=\"https:\/\/richyrocks.com\/coolenglish\/remembering-the-silly-silo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">amusement park<\/a> in the days before disneyland and six flags. <strong>george burns<\/strong> and <strong>gracie allen<\/strong>, a husband and wife comedy team, participate in the scene. 40 years later, george burns appeared in three films in the role that defined him for generation x,\u00a0 god.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/oh-god-u-devil-trailer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in part 3<\/a>, he played the devil too.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Oh God!
