earlier this month at the 75th\u00a0golden globe awards<\/strong>,\u00a0oprah winfrey<\/strong> was presented the cecil b. demille award for\u00a0outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

oprah gave a speech at the golden globes that talked about\u00a0<\/em>empowering<\/span><\/em>\u00a0women and gave people the idea she might run for president. (paul drinkwater\/nbc)<\/em><\/h5>\n

annie karini<\/strong> at politico.com<\/strong> explained<\/a> that winfrey’s acceptance speech described a<\/p>\n

\u201cnew day\u201d dawning<\/em> on the backs of empowered<\/em> women \u201cfighting hard to make sure that they become the leaders who take us to the time when nobody ever has to say \u2018me too\u2019<\/em> again.\u201d<\/h4>\n

\u00a0dawn<\/strong><\/em> means begin<\/em>, or when the sun comes up<\/em>. empowered<\/strong><\/em> means with power<\/em>. me too<\/strong><\/em> refers to the twitter hashtag that has been used to build solidarity among victims of sexual harassment. too<\/strong> <\/em>in this context means also<\/em>.<\/p>\n

later in her speech, as reported<\/a> in martin belam<\/strong>‘s\u00a0 guardian.com<\/strong> article,\u00a0 winfrey said<\/p>\n

for too long<\/em>, women have not been heard or believed<\/em> if they dare<\/em> speak the truth to the power of those men. but their time is up<\/em>. their time is up<\/em>.<\/h4>\n

too<\/a> long<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0means the time has been excessive<\/em>, longer than acceptable<\/em>. have not been heard or believed<\/em><\/strong> is present perfect<\/a> passive voice<\/strong>. it is implied but not mentioned that\u00a0society<\/span>\u00a0hasn’t listened or believed women who report sexual harassment.\u00a0\u00a0dare<\/em><\/strong> means risk<\/em>.\u00a0time is up<\/em><\/strong>, which has become another popular hashtag on twitter, means time is finished<\/em>, over<\/em> or through<\/em>.<\/p>\n
