the earthquake that struck<\/em> the coast of southern mexico, late on september 7th, was a big one, with a magnitude of 8.2……president, enrique pe\u00f1a nieto, called the quake<\/em> the strongest in at least a century. but it was not the most destructive. in 1985 a slightly <\/a>smaller quake<\/em>\u2014measuring 8.0\u2014off the coast of michoac\u00e1n state in the west killed at least 10,000 people, many of them in mexico city. at least 40 live babies were pulled out<\/em> of the rubble<\/em> of a collapsed hospital.<\/h4>\n

struck<\/em> is the irregular past tense of strike<\/strong><\/em>. it’s one option for talking about the occurence of aearthquake. some others are: an earthquake\u00a0hit<\/u><\/em>\u00a0southern mexico,\u00a0there was<\/u><\/em>\u00a0an earthquake last week or what time of day did the earthquake happen<\/u><\/em>? quake<\/strong><\/em> is a shortened form of earthquake. rubble<\/strong><\/em> is what’s left after the destruction of a building.<\/em>\u00a0a synonym used in the article to describe the garbage created by the quake<\/em> is debris<\/strong><\/em> (pronounced duh-BREE).\u00a0pull out\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/a>describes how babies were rescued from the rubble<\/em>.<\/p>\n

the article provides more contrasts between last week’s quake and the one in 1985<\/p>\n

the epicentre of the southern mexican earthquake was farther away from mexico city than that of the 1985 quake and caused less violent shaking<\/em> there. but even so, the capital has tightened<\/em> building codes and is enforcing them better than it did 32 years ago. the city has also improved its preparation for and response to disasters. apartment and office blocks now often hold<\/em> earthquake drills<\/em>.<\/h4>\n

epicentre <\/strong><\/em>(the point on the earth’s surface directly above where the earthquake originated) is a british spelling. \u00a0<\/strong><\/em>americans write epicent<\/em>er<\/u><\/i>. shake<\/strong> <\/em>means move all around, vibrate<\/em>. tighten<\/strong><\/em> means the building codes have become stricter<\/em>. hold<\/strong><\/em><\/a> means have, do<\/em>. a drill<\/strong><\/em> is a simulation<\/em> or a practice<\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0some other disasters that motivate schools and businesses to have drills<\/em> are fires, hurricanes and tornadoes.<\/p>\n

unfortunately, the preparation in the capital has not extended to the rest of the country.<\/p>\n

building standards and disaster preparation have improved less in smaller cities. the municipal secretary of juchit\u00e1n, [oaxaca] where at least 36 people died, told the new york times<\/strong>it was as if<\/em> his town had been bombed. mexico\u2019s newer culture of safety has not fully replaced slapdash<\/em> practices rooted<\/em> in corruption and weak rule of law. too much building still happens in flood-prone<\/em> areas, largely because officials take bribes<\/em> to allow it.<\/h4>\n

as if <\/strong><\/em><\/a>is similar to like. slapdash<\/strong><\/em> means negligent<\/em>, careless<\/em>. rooted<\/a><\/strong><\/em>\u00a0indicates that the slapdash<\/em> practices come from\u00a0<\/em>corruption. prone<\/strong><\/em><\/a> refers to areas where floods often happen<\/em>. a bribe<\/strong><\/em><\/a> is money paid to do or allow an illegal act<\/em>.<\/p>\n
