tenacity<\/em><\/h5>\n<p><strong>economist.com<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/mexico-earthquake-economist\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">explains<\/a><\/p>\n<h4>the earthquake that <em>struck<\/em> the coast of southern mexico, late on september 7th, was a big one, with a magnitude of 8.2&#8230;&#8230;president, enrique pe\u00f1a nieto, called the <em>quake<\/em> the strongest in at least a century. but it was not the most destructive. in 1985 a <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/slightly-definition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">slightly <\/a>smaller <em>quake<\/em>\u2014measuring 8.0\u2014off the coast of michoac\u00e1n state in the west killed at least 10,000 people, many of them in mexico city. at least 40 live babies were <em>pulled out<\/em> of the <em>rubble<\/em> of a collapsed hospital.<\/h4>\n<p><em>struck<\/em> is the irregular past tense of <em><strong>strike<\/strong><\/em>. it&#8217;s one option for talking about the occurence of aearthquake. some others are: an earthquake\u00a0<em><u>hit<\/u><\/em>\u00a0southern mexico,\u00a0<em><u>there was<\/u><\/em>\u00a0an earthquake last week or what time of day did the earthquake <em><u>happen<\/u><\/em>? <em><strong>quake<\/strong><\/em> is a shortened form of earthquake. <em><strong>rubble<\/strong><\/em> is <em>what&#8217;s left after the destruction of a building.<\/em>\u00a0a synonym used in the article to describe <em>the garbage created by the quake<\/em> is <em><strong>debris<\/strong><\/em> (pronounced duh-BREE).\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/pull-out-definition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong>pull out\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/a>describes how babies were rescued from the <em>rubble<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h5><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6602\" article provides more contrasts between last week&#8217;s quake and the one in 1985<\/p>\n<h4>the epicentre of the southern mexican earthquake was farther away from mexico city than that of the 1985 quake and caused less violent <em>shaking<\/em> there. but even so, the capital has <em>tightened<\/em> building codes and is enforcing them better than it did 32 years ago. the city has also improved its preparation for and response to disasters. apartment and office blocks now often <em>hold<\/em> earthquake <em>drills<\/em>.<\/h4>\n<p><em><strong>epicentre <\/strong><\/em>(the point on the earth&#8217;s surface directly above where the earthquake originated) is a british spelling<em><strong>. \u00a0<\/strong><\/em>americans write <em>epicent<\/em><i><u>er<\/u><\/i>.<em><strong> shake<\/strong> <\/em>means <em>move all around, vibrate<\/em>. <em><strong>tighten<\/strong><\/em> means the building codes have become <em>stricter<\/em>. <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/hold-definition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong>hold<\/strong><\/em><\/a> means <em>have, do<\/em>. a <em><strong>drill<\/strong><\/em> is a <em>simulation<\/em> or a <em>practice<\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0some other disasters that motivate schools and businesses to have <em>drills<\/em> are fires, hurricanes and tornadoes.<\/p>\n<h5><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6584\" src=\"https:\/\/richyrocks.com\/coolenglish\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/200-2.gif\" alt=\"andre 3000 shaking it in capital has not extended to the rest of the country.<\/p>\n<h4>building standards and disaster preparation have improved less in smaller cities. the municipal secretary of juchit\u00e1n, [oaxaca] where at least 36 people died, told the <strong>new york times<\/strong>it was <em>as if<\/em> his town had been bombed. mexico\u2019s newer culture of safety has not fully replaced <em>slapdash<\/em> practices <em>rooted<\/em> in corruption and weak rule of law. too much building still happens in flood-<em>prone<\/em> areas, largely because officials take <em>bribes<\/em> to allow it.<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/as-if-definition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong>as if <\/strong><\/em><\/a>is similar to<em> like<strong>. slapdash<\/strong><\/em> means <em>negligent<\/em>, <em>careless<\/em>. <em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/rooted-definition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rooted<\/a><\/strong><\/em>\u00a0indicates that the<em> slapdash<\/em> practices <em>come from\u00a0<\/em>corruption. <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/prone-to-def\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong>prone<\/strong><\/em><\/a> refers to areas where floods <em>often happen<\/em>. a <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/bribe-definition-examples\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong>bribe<\/strong><\/em><\/a> is <em>money paid to do or allow an illegal maps)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>the following vocabulary is also useful for talking about earthquakes&#8230;.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>aftershocks<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0(little earthquakes that happen after a big earthquake) have continued this week in southern mexico.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6580\" <\/em><em><u>sturdy<\/u><\/em><em>.<\/em><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>if u are inside a building when an earthquake <em>hits<\/em>\u00a0some organizations recommend that u\u00a0<em><strong>get under<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0a <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/sturdy-definition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong>sturdy<\/strong><\/em><\/a> (well-built, strong) desk or table, like the guy in the picture above.<em>\u00a0<\/em>when the <em>shaking<\/em> stops, \u00a0<em><strong>get out from under<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0(the opposite of <em>get under<\/em>) the table and evacuate the building.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6571 aligncenter\"
