so clearly mcgregor, after getting hit in the head enough times for the referee to stop the fight, was complimenting floyd on successfully adopting the fierce<\/a>, fun-to-watch style of mexican boxers. \u00a0so why was there a mild freak out <\/a>in the media and on social media? \u00a0cody brunner opened his article with conor mcgregor’s quote and then the question<\/p>\n

sounds pretty<\/a> bad, right?<\/h4>\n

not really. the issue isn’t that mcgregor compared mayweather (favorably) to\u00a0mexicans. the issue is that americans automatically assume that mexican<\/em> is negative–an insult. this reflects not only the widespread<\/strong><\/em><\/a>\u00a0(extensive) racism that donald trump exploited in order to get elected and continues to cultivate, but also an overwhelming<\/strong><\/em><\/a>\u00a0(really big) ignorance about mexico in general.<\/p>\n

the reality is that mexico does A LOT of things well, boxing being one of them. \u00a0believe it or not, mexico<\/em> and mexican<\/em> are sometimes used outside the context of xenophobic stereotypes, the war on drugs or socioeconomic\u00a0maladies<\/em><\/strong> (problems).<\/p>\n

on the broadcast of the fight i was watching, right when mcgregor started to make his comments, tv azteca<\/strong> cut to a commercial. no shit. totally oblivious<\/em><\/strong> (no idea what happened).<\/p>\n

while conor mcgregor was claiming that he turned mayweather into a mexican, tv azteca’s audience was listening to these controversial words.<\/em><\/h5>\n

finally, in reference to the final sentence of the bleacher report article…<\/p>\n

for one farewell<\/em> night in las vegas, mayweather was “mexican money<\/em>.”<\/h4>\n

let’s keep it real. a farewell<\/strong><\/em><\/a> is a formal goodbye<\/em>, and\u00a0money<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0is mayweather’s nickname. but calling floyd \u00a0“mexican money” devalues his nickname by more than 90%. \u00a0it takes about 18 pesos to make a dollar.<\/p>\n
