simpson&#8217;s reflective parole hearing (2017)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>last month the u.s. media turned it&#8217;s attention back to a familiar personality. <strong>o.j. simpson<\/strong> was up for <em><strong>parole<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0(conditional release) for his 2007 robbery conviction. he gave over 30 minutes of testimony to show that he is prepared to re-enter society.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6446\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6446\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-6446 size-medium\" being accused of the 1994 <strong><em>stabbing<\/em><\/strong> deaths (with a knife) of his ex-wife <strong>nicole brown<\/strong> and her friend <strong>ronald goldman<\/strong>, he was tried for those murders and <strong><em>acquitted<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>(found not guilty)<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>in 1995, though large portions of the american public didn&#8217;t agree with the <strong><em>verdict<\/em><\/strong> (decision).<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><a title=\"richyrocks english on youtube\" href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/richyrocks-youtube-subscribe\" the most darkly ironic line being<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\">i would never, ever <em>pull a weapon<\/em> on anybody<\/h4>\n<div style=\"width: 758px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><!--[if a weapon<\/strong><\/em> means <em>show it with the intention of using it.<\/em> \u00a0notice that the <em>ea<\/em> in <em>weapon<\/em> is pronounced like <em>br<\/em><em><i><u>ea<\/u><\/i><\/em><em>d<\/em> or <em>h<i><u>ea<\/u><\/i>lth<\/em>, not like <em>b<i><u>ea<\/u><\/i>t<\/em> or <em>t<i><u>ea<\/u><\/i>m. <\/em>at the beginning of the video o.j. also insists he \u00a0is no danger to <em>pull a gun<\/em> on anybody.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>much of o.j.&#8217;s dialogue is a summary of the <em><strong>botched<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0(poorly executed, <a href=\"http:\/\/richyrocks.com\/flub-other-vocab-from-the-oscars-flub\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">flubbed<\/a>) attempt to recover his personal property at a meeting with <em>memorabilia<\/em> collectors in a hotel room in las vegas. simpson explained\u00a0that the meeting was <em><strong>set up<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0(arranged) through\u00a0<strong>thomas riccio<\/strong>, \u00a0a <em>memorabilia<\/em> dealer who<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><em>had contacted<\/em> me over a period of time, told me that there were some guys that was trying to get him to <em>fence<\/em> my property and he thought i should come and get it. well, i <em>kinda<\/em> <em>blew him off<\/em> because i&#8217;m really not interested in football property. i don&#8217;t collect\u00a0<em>memorabilia<\/em>, only my own personal items.<\/h4>\n<p><em><strong>had contacted<\/strong> <\/em>is <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/richyrocks-past-perfect\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>past perfect<\/strong><\/a>. it is used to refer to the robbery and the time<em> leading up to it<\/em>. <strong><em>fence<\/em> <\/strong>means\u00a0<em>buying and selling stolen things<\/em>. <a href=\"https:\/\/richyrocks.com\/coolenglish\/tag\/blow-off-definition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong>blow off<\/strong><\/em><\/a> means <em>not pay attention to<\/em>. <a href=\"http:\/\/richyrocks.com\/tom-bradys-super-bowl-jerseys-tracked-down\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>memorabilia<\/em><\/strong><\/a> are <em>collectibles, <\/em>in this case, with a connection to o.j.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 758px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video href=\"https:\/\/richyrocks.com\/coolenglish\/tag\/past-modals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <strong>past modals<\/strong><\/a> are often used to talk about <a href=\"https:\/\/richyrocks.com\/coolenglish\/tag\/regret-definition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>regretted<\/em><\/strong><\/a> actions (things u feel sorry about), so it&#8217;s not surprising to hear o.j. use them several times. for example, he gave the idea that he was <em><strong>talked into<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>(persuaded)\u00a0bringing security personnel with him though he didn&#8217;t believe he needed them. one of the security professionals, <strong>michael mcclinton<\/strong>, <em>pulled a gun<\/em> during the meeting, initiating all of the subsequent legal problems. o.j. admits<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>i <em>shoulda vetted<\/em> him<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><em><strong>vet<\/strong><\/em> means <em>investigate,<\/em> <em>evaluate closely<\/em>. past modals are often <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/reductions-richyrocks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reduced <\/a>from <em>would have<\/em>, <em>could have<\/em> or<em> should have<\/em> to <a href=\"http:\/\/richyrocks.com\/shoulda-woulda-coulda\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">woulda, coulda or shoulda<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 758px;\" style=\"text-align: center;\">o.j. talked about how spending the past 9 years in jail has affected his family life&#8230;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>u know i spent the 12 years <em>leading up to<\/em> this incident in vegas\u00a0<em>raising<\/em> two kids [in miami]. and u know, with all the media <em>stuff<\/em>&#8230;&#8230;. i was able to keep them to <em>keep their eye on the ball<\/em>, get great <em>grades<\/em> and went to the college of their choice and i <em>end up<\/em> missing their graduation because of it, trust me, i <em>wish it would never have never happened<\/em>.<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/richyrocks.com\/coolenglish\/tag\/lead-up-to-definition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong>lead up to<\/strong><\/em> <\/a>means <em>precede<\/em>. <a href=\"https:\/\/richyrocks.com\/coolenglish\/tag\/raise-definition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong>raise<\/strong><\/em><\/a> means <em>take care of while they <a href=\"http:\/\/richyrocks.com\/flub-other-vocab-from-the-oscars-flub\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">grow up<\/a><\/em>. <em><strong>keep their eye on the ball<\/strong><\/em> means stay focused on what is important. <em><strong>grades<\/strong><\/em> are <em>evaluations at school<\/em>, NOT <em>qualifications<\/em> which is a common spanglish based on the spanish <em>calificaciones<\/em>. <strong><em>end up<\/em><\/strong> means it happened that way even though it was not his intention. <em>would never have happened<\/em> is a past modal. it is common to see ball<\/em><\/h5>\n<p>simpson also commented on how courses he took in the prison might help him outside.<\/p>\n<h4><em>moreso<\/em>, from, i think, \u00a0my <em>commitment<\/em> to being a better christian, because i thought i was a good guy, i had some problems with fidelity in my life, but i&#8217;ve always been a guy that <em>pretty much<\/em> <em>got along with<\/em> everybody.<\/h4>\n<p><em><strong>moreso<\/strong> <\/em>is basically the same as\u00a0<em>more<\/em>. many dictionaries do not believe it&#8217;s a real word. <a href=\"https:\/\/richyrocks.com\/coolenglish\/tag\/commitment-definition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>commitment<\/em> <\/strong><\/a>is <em>dedication<\/em>. <a href=\"https:\/\/richyrocks.com\/coolenglish\/tag\/pretty-much-definition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong>pretty much<\/strong><\/em><\/a> is similar to <em>more or less<\/em>. rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong>humbled<\/strong><\/em><\/a>\u00a0(made less arrogant) by his incarceration.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>simpson <em><strong>affirms<\/strong><\/em> (says yes), apologizes to the people of nevada, repeats two more times that he <em>wishes it (the incident) would have never happened<\/em>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/richyrocks.com\/coolenglish\/tag\/lament-definition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong>laments<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0<\/a>(regrets) how he tried to get his <a href=\"https:\/\/richyrocks.com\/coolenglish\/tag\/stuff-definition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong>stuff<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0<\/a>(things) back&#8230;..<\/p>\n<h4>if i <em>woulda made<\/em> a better judgment back then, none of this <strong><em>would&#8217;ve happened<\/em><\/strong>. i take full responsibility, because i <em>should&#8217;ve never<\/em>&#8230;&#8230;..u know, i haven&#8217;t made any excuses in 9 years here, but i <em>shoulda never allowed<\/em> these <em>alleged<\/em> security guys to help me, because it <em>turned out<\/em> they were only trying to help themselves.<\/h4>\n<p><em><strong>woulda made<\/strong><\/em>,\u00a0<em><strong>would&#8217;ve happened<\/strong><\/em> are <strong>3rd conditional<\/strong>, or a past modal used with an <strong>if clause<\/strong> (if i woulda made a better judgment) and another past modal that suggests an alternative result (none of this woulda happened). <em><strong>shoulda never allowed<\/strong><\/em> is another past modal.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/richyrocks.com\/super-bowl-xlix-ratings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong>alleged<\/strong> <\/em><\/a>means <em>supposed, not verified<\/em>. <a
