mike schmidt<\/strong> had a hall of fame career as a third baseman with the philadelphia phillies<\/strong><\/span>. nowadays he is a weekend analyst for the phillies so\u00a0his opinions about the team generate some interest with the public. last week, however, schmidt’s analysis of a current phillies player received much more attention than normal.<\/p>\n

in an interview with angelo cataldi<\/strong> of sports radio 94 w<\/strong>ip\u00a0<\/b>\u00a0schmidt said he doesn’t think the phillies center fielder odubel herrera\u00a0<\/strong>can be a central piece of the the team’s future because he doesn’t speak enough english. <\/strong>herrera is venezuelan and spanish is his mother tongue<\/strong><\/em> (native language).<\/p>\n

an \u00a0l.a. times<\/strong> article reports<\/a>\u00a0that cataldi couldn’t believe the negative reaction schmidt’s comments got. he said<\/p>\n

it’s ridiculous the media has blown this out of proportion<\/em>. if this was<\/em> newsworthy<\/em>, iwould’ve known<\/em> as soon as<\/a> he said it.<\/h4>\n

blow out of proportion<\/strong><\/em> means exaggerate<\/em>. newsworthy<\/em><\/strong> <\/a>means it should get attention from the media<\/em>, literally worthy<\/em><\/a> of news.<\/em>\u00a0if this was<\/strong><\/em> (2nd conditional<\/a>) and\u00a0would’ve known<\/strong><\/em> (3rd conditonal<\/strong><\/a>) indicate a hypothtetical idea. in reality, cataldi definitely did NOT understand how much the rest of the media wanted to talk about what schmidt said.<\/p>\n

i don’t wanna offend anyone, but odubel’s english? <\/em>horseshit<\/u><\/i><\/em><\/a>.<\/em><\/h6>\n

mike bates<\/strong> at mlbdailydish.com<\/strong> noted<\/a> that schmidt<\/p>\n

doubled down<\/em> in a non-apology<\/em> that blamed<\/em> the media<\/h4>\n

bates calls it a non-apology<\/strong><\/em> because it was released as an apology, but doesn’t really say “i’m sorry”. instead, schmidt\u00a0blames<\/strong><\/em> (says it is their fault) the media for the controversy. \u00a0double down<\/strong><\/em><\/a> means maintain the same position but with more intensity<\/em>, which is what schmidt’s non-apology did. he says he didn’t mean any harm<\/a> and reiterates<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0(repeats) that english is essential to odubel’s ability as a leader.<\/p>\n

i assure everyone i had no intention of [offending anyone]. odubel is a dynamo on the field, and as he becomes more comfortable with the language, his leadership\u00a0skills<\/em>\u00a0will improve<\/h4>\n

other baseball blogs share bates’ view. evan grant<\/strong> at sportsday.dallasnews.com<\/strong> says <\/a>there is no such thing<\/strong><\/em> as a language barrier i.e. it doesn’t exist<\/em>, and chris korman<\/strong> at ftw.usatoday.com<\/strong> observes<\/a><\/p>\n

anyone trying to say that spanish-speaking players can\u2019t pick up<\/em> the nuances<\/em> of the game or aren\u2019t earnestly<\/em> trying to learn it is hopelessly\u00a0out of touch<\/em>.<\/h4>\n

pick up<\/strong><\/em><\/a> means learn<\/em>. nuance<\/strong><\/em> is a small difference or detail<\/em>. \u00a0earnestly<\/strong><\/em><\/a> means sincerely<\/em>.\u00a0out of touch<\/strong><\/em> is not connected<\/em> or not familiar with new techniques.\u00a0<\/em>it is also the title of my favorite song by philly natives\u00a0hall and oates<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
