are freaking out\u00a0<\/em>about house of cards<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/em>? season 4 of of the political thriller will be available tomorrow, march 4. \u00a0even if u are not a fan of the series, there is some useful vocabulary u can take from last season, (specifically episode 11) including examples of freak<\/em> and freak out<\/em>.<\/p>\n

the episode focuses on the campaign leading up to<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0(before, in anticipation of) the iowa caucus<\/a>. in this video clip, we see the opening of a fictional debate between president frank underwood (kevin spacey<\/strong>) and two other democratic candidates. cnn’s michelle kosinski<\/strong>\u00a0breaks it down<\/em><\/strong><\/a> (explains it)<\/p>\n

there is a large crowd here in sioux city tonight. i would say potential voters, but of course, here in iowa, citizens caucus instead of<\/em> vote, and many of the people here in this room will be doing just that on january 15th. a cnn\/ orc\u00a0poll has it as a tight<\/em> race between the two front-runners<\/em>: heather dunbar at 32 percent, president frank underwood at 30 percent. congresswoman jackie sharp trails<\/em> in third at 14 percent. 22\u00a0percent remain undecided.<\/h4>\n

instead of<\/strong><\/em> means as an alternative to<\/em>. \u00a0front-runner<\/strong><\/em> refers to who’s leading the race at a specific moment<\/em>. \u00a0trail<\/strong> <\/em>indicates that jackie sharp is behind<\/em>, losing<\/em>.<\/p>\n

oh, shit<\/em>. have you ever seen contagion<\/a><\/strong><\/em>?…if you’re a clean freak<\/em>, this’ll definitely make u a germ freak<\/em>.<\/h4>\n

oh shit<\/strong><\/em> expresses\u00a0emotion, in this case, a little excitement. \u00a0freak<\/strong><\/em> is a weird<\/a> or crazy person. \u00a0it can be used as an insult but it is not always negative.<\/p>\n

freak out<\/strong><\/em> means\u00a0he had a strong negative reaction, it upset<\/em>\u00a0him; it can also mean to lose emotional control<\/em>.<\/p>\n

upsetting<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0(disturbing) is used in this commercial at :13 as a reaction to burger king<\/span><\/strong>‘s decision to stop selling the whopper, their most popular\u00a0sandwich. they didn’t really stop selling the whopper, it was only an experiment;\u00a0but as the announcer says at the end of the spot, bk customers freaked<\/strong><\/em> (same idea as freaked out<\/em>).<\/p>\n
