autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>as the title indicates, jerry spends most of this speech criticizing the idea of giving an award to a comedian. at :12 on the video he explains<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><em>first of all<\/em>, comedians don&#8217;t need awards. awards are for people that are looking for work, we&#8217;re not looking for work. if you&#8217;re any good as a comedian <em>you&#8217;ve got<\/em> tons of work. we&#8217;ve all got <em>wrinkled<\/em> suits and <em>smelly<\/em> shirts from packing and unpacking and <em>schlepping<\/em> all over the goddamn country doing 10 million different kinds of <em>gigs<\/em>. and\u00a0<em>secondly<\/em> and <em>even<\/em> more important, is um, your whole career as a comedian is about <em>making fun of<\/em> <em>pretentious<\/em>, <em>high-minded<\/em>, <em>self-congratulatory<\/em>, <em>bs<\/em> events like this one.<\/h4>\n<p><em><strong>first of all<\/strong><\/em> is a good way to introduce the first in a series of observations or points. <strong><em>secondly<\/em><\/strong> is used to present the second point\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/richyrocks.com\/american-perspectives-on-immigration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>you&#8217;ve got<\/em><\/strong><\/a> is the same as <em>u have<\/em>.\u00a0 a <strong><em>wrinkled<\/em><\/strong> suit has visible, temporary lines or creases in the fabric. <em><strong>smelly<\/strong><\/em> means <em>smells bad<\/em>. <strong><em>schlep<\/em><\/strong> means <em>difficult travelling<\/em>. a <em><strong>gig<\/strong><\/em> is a <em>job<\/em>, usually related to live music or comedy. <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/even-def\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>even<\/em><\/strong><\/a> is added for emphasis.\u00a0<em><strong>make fun of<\/strong><\/em> means <em>joke about, laugh at<\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0<em><strong>pretentious<\/strong><\/em> (acting important),\u00a0 <strong><em>self-congratulatory<\/em><\/strong> (telling\u00a0 yourself that u did a great job) and\u00a0 <em><strong>bs<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0(bullshit&#8211;&gt;<a href=\"http:\/\/richyrocks.com\/2k18-hilarious-glitch-kd-celebrates-with-okc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fake<\/a>) are all negative vocabulary. seinfeld is using <em><strong>high-minded<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0(ethical) to criticize awards too, but by definition, it has a positive implication.<\/p>\n<h5><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6708\" src=\"http:\/\/richyrocks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/wrinkled-suit-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"a wrinkled suit coat\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/richyrocks.com\/coolenglish\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/wrinkled-suit-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/richyrocks.com\/coolenglish\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/wrinkled-suit.jpg 650w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/h5>\n<h5><em>this suit jacket is seriously <u>wrinkled<\/u>. professions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>every <em>real estate<\/em> office has some<em> framed<\/em>, 5-diamond president&#8217;s award by the desk, every hotel check-in has some gold circle service thing, every car salesman&#8217;s a platinum jubilee winner and it&#8217;s all a big <em>jerkoff<\/em>. it is. the hotel <em>sucks<\/em>. the real estate person is stupid, and the only thing the car salesman is good at is <em>ripping u off<\/em>.<\/h4>\n<p><em><strong>real estate<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0is <em>buying and selling land &amp; buildings<\/em>. <strong><em>framed<\/em><\/strong> means\u00a0<em>presented in a picture frame<\/em>.\u00a0<b>\u00a0<em>jerkoff<\/em><\/b>\u00a0literally refers to <em>masturbation<\/em>,\u00a0 in this context the idea is that the awards don&#8217;t have any substance; they are <em>self-congratulatory<\/em>. <em><strong>sucks<\/strong><\/em> means it&#8217;s bad.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/rip-off-definition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>rip off<\/em><\/strong> <\/a>means <em>take advantage of<\/em>, <em>give a bad deal<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium <em><strong>rip into<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0(attack) the concept of entertainment awards.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><em>it is beyond me<\/em> that we feel the need to <em>set aside<\/em> a night to <em>give out<\/em> these <em>jagoff<\/em> <em>bowling trophies<\/em> six times a year so all these people can <em>pat each other on the back<\/em> about how much money they&#8217;re making <em>boring the piss out of<\/em> half the world.<\/h4>\n<p><em><strong>it is beyond me<\/strong><\/em> is an expression that means<em> i don&#8217;t understand<\/em>, <em>i&#8217;m confused<\/em>. <em><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/set-aside-definition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>set aside<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>applied here<em>,\u00a0<\/em>means <em>designate or <\/em>schedule. <em><strong>give out<\/strong> <\/em>means <em>present<\/em>. \u00a0<em><strong>jagoff<\/strong> <\/em>means <em>stupid<\/em>. jerry doesn&#8217;t literally mean <em><strong>bowling trophies<\/strong><\/em>,\u00a0he uses that unglamourous metaphor to <em>make fun of<\/em> other supposedly prestigious awards.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone professions: acting.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>i don&#8217;t know why we&#8217;re so fascinated with actors in this culture. they <em>haven&#8217;t got<\/em> a thought in their stupid <em>bedhead<\/em> <em>hairdo<\/em> mini-brains. we must honor this man. why?\u00a0 he <em>pretended<\/em> to be bob johnson.<\/h4>\n<p><em><strong>bedhead<\/strong><\/em> is <em>what hair looks like right after waking up<\/em>, but it is also <em>an intentionally messy <strong>hairdo<\/strong> (hairsytle) worn by celebrities<\/em>. <strong><em>pretend<\/em><\/strong> is <em>make believe<\/em>,
