i don’t have snapchat<\/strong>. \u00a0when i first heard of it\u00a0i\u00a0thought—another photo app? unnecessary. \u00a0when i understood that\u00a0u could put a dog face or a rainbow stream of vomit on a selfie, i still wasn’t interested, and the clincher<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0<\/a>(conclusive point) came several months later when i read somewhere that snapchat users over a certain age look like douchebags<\/em><\/strong> (think they are cool but they are not). i was over the age.<\/p>\n

who would have thought<\/strong> <\/em>is a hypothetical in the past (3rd conditional<\/a>) that is commonly\u00a0used to express surprise. \u00a0augmented reality<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0(ar) superimposes animated images on\u00a0real ones. as solsman mentions a few\u00a0times in the article, pokemon go<\/a> is a widely recognized application of ar.<\/p>\n

a pitch<\/em><\/strong> is used to convince, <\/em>e.g a sales pitch<\/span>.\u00a0<\/em>according to the article,\u00a0snap inc.’s pitch<\/em> was subtle<\/strong><\/em> (not direct or obvious). they didn’t directly promote their filters as\u00a0augmented reality.<\/p>\n

solsman describes the evolution of snap products like this<\/p>\n

mixed reality takes ar\u00a0a step further<\/em> by making\u00a0[the]\u00a0digital overlays react to you and the things around you. if snap dipped its toes<\/em> into ar\u00a0with filters, it jumped into mixed reality with its lenses. spectacles, meanwhile<\/em>, transformed snap from an app company into a device maker too. in the process, the camera-equipped sunglasses shoved<\/em> it further<\/em> down the path toward ar.<\/h4>\n

wearability<\/strong><\/em> is literally the ability to wear<\/em>. \u00a0snap’s spectacles<\/strong> are wearable<\/em> technology. a gateway drug<\/em><\/strong> is a recreational drug people experiment with that leads to <\/a>using more intoxicating and dangerous drug.<\/em> \u00a0creepiness<\/strong><\/em> means google glass makes the public feel uncomfortable<\/em>; it’s scary<\/em>. it’s ironic\u00a0that merrick talks about the creepiness<\/em> of google glass\u00a0while comparing it to a\u00a0product that he calls\u00a0a “gateway drug”. \u00a0gateway drug<\/em> is a really creepy<\/em> metaphor. it sounds like the companies want u to experience a growing addiction to their products.<\/p>\n

osterhout design group<\/strong> (odg) is another company that has benefitted thanks to snapchat’s subtle presentation of ar. \u00a0solsman’s \u00a0article reports<\/p>\n

get used to<\/strong><\/em><\/a> is the same as get accustomed to<\/em>; the process of something becoming normal<\/em> or regular<\/em>. odg uses fun ar applications like snapchat’s filters and lenses to do this.<\/p>\n
