by the chainsmokers\" width=\"758\" height=\"426\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BbXyihlWnk4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>the vid refers to millennials as <em><strong>entitled<\/strong><\/em> or <em>believing they have a right to certain privileges<\/em>. this is a common millennial stereotype.<\/p>\n<p>specifically, the <a href=\"https:\/\/richyrocks.com\/coolenglish\/we-used-a-robot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">complaint<\/a> at the beginning of the video is that millennials are <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/willing-def\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">unwilling <\/a>to take a\u00a0<em>shit<\/em> job for <em>shit<\/em> pay. <em><strong>shit<\/strong><\/em> in this context is what u would expect: a <em>bad<\/em> job that <em>doesn&#8217;t pay well<\/em>. \u00a0however at :47 in the phrase <em>gotta analyze this <strong>shit<\/strong><\/em>, <em><u>this shit<\/u><\/em>\u00a0is referring to the song and is neutral, NOT negative.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"richyrocks english on youtube\" href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/richyrocks-youtube-subscribe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fun english practice\u00a0<span class=\"wp-smiley emoji emoji-smile\" title=\":)\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-smiley\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/richyrocks.com\/coolenglish\/wp-includes\/images\/smilies\/simple-smile.png?w=668\" alt=\":)\" width=\"12\" height=\"12\" \/><\/span>\u00a0richyrocks english on youtube<\/a><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/richyrocks.com\/marshawn-lynch-oakland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em><strong>grow up<\/strong><\/em><\/a>\u00a0(:20) means <em>act like an adult<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>the reference to <strong>merle haggard<\/strong> at :55 is ironic. haggard is an icon of unapologetic, hard-drinking <em><strong>honky tonk<\/strong> <\/em>(old-school country)\u00a0music. in contrast, the male vocal in <em>closer<\/em>\u00a0admits to a drinking problem\u00a0in the first verse of the song.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Merle Haggard - The Bottle Let Me Down (Live)\" width=\"758\" height=\"569\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2PCL9W54QVw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>beat to death<\/strong><\/em>, from the female vocal, is a widely used expression but has a dark literal meaning: to <em>hit a living creature\u00a0until it dies<\/em>. nobody is thinking about murder when they say\u00a0it though. it&#8217;s just an expression. as explained in the video at 1:17 it means to <em>repeat something over and over<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>clever<\/strong><\/em> (smart) is used to define\u00a0the chainsmokers&#8217;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/richyrocks.com\/coolenglish\/tag\/wordplay-definition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-schema-attribute=\"\"><em><strong>wordplay<\/strong><\/em><\/a>\u00a0(interesting word usage) at 1:55. the chorus\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/richyrocks.com\/coolenglish\/chris-cornell-soundgarden-black-hole-sun\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em><strong>j<\/strong><\/em><\/a><em><strong>uxtaposes<\/strong><\/em> (places close together to contrast or compare) two different ideas for the word <em>break<\/em>:\u00a0<em>breaks<\/em> your heart and\u00a0<em>broke-<\/em>down car.<\/p>\n<h6><a href=\"https:\/\/richyrocks.com\/coolenglish\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/jumping-rope.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5488\" src=\"https:\/\/richyrocks.com\/coolenglish\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/jumping-rope.jpg\" alt=\"a woman and a man jumping rope\" width=\"286\" height=\"226\" \/><\/a><\/h6>\n<h6>a jump rope\u00a0<em><u>chant<\/u>. the <em>clever wordplay<\/em>, at first the chorus of the song<em><strong> turned me off<\/strong>,\u00a0<\/em>i.e. <em>made me not like it,\u00a0<\/em>because it sounds like kids <em><strong>chanting<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0(rhytmically repeating) while \u00a0jumping rope or <em><strong>teasing<\/strong><\/em> (<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/mock-def\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mocking<\/a>) other kids on a playground.<\/p>\n<p>the analysis of the lyric<\/p>\n<h4>the mattress that u stole from your roommate back in boulder<\/h4>\n<p>produces three <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/tag-questions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>tag questions<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<h6><a href=\"https:\/\/richyrocks.com\/coolenglish\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/tuscon-blink-182-map.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5484\" src=\"https:\/\/richyrocks.com\/coolenglish\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/tuscon-blink-182-map.png\" alt=\"boulder colorado &amp; tucson arizona\" width=\"301\" height=\"222\" \/><\/a><\/h6>\n<h6><em>boulder, colorado &amp; tucson, arizona are the two cities that appear in the lyrics of <strong>closer<\/strong><\/em><\/h6>\n<p><em><strong>tag questions<\/strong> <\/em>are comments that are converted into questions by adding an auxiliary verb and a pronoun at the end.<\/p>\n<h4>[<u>it was<\/u>] cool to steal your roommate&#8217;s mattress, <em>wasn&#8217;t it<\/em>?<\/h4>\n<h4><u>wouldn&#8217;t wanna<\/u><em><u>\u00a0<\/u><\/em>work and earn a mattress, <em>would ya<\/em>?<\/h4>\n<h4><u>it&#8217;s got<\/u>\u00a0no consequences, <em>does it<\/em>?<\/h4>\n<p><em><strong>the kid who got his mattress stolen<\/strong><\/em> (2:40) is an example of how <em>get<\/em> can be used in <strong>passive voice<\/strong>. who stole the mattress is not mentioned and <em>stolen<\/em> is the irregular past participle of steal.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>get back together<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0(3:10)\u00a0means <em>restart a relationship with an old partner<\/em>. \u00a0millennials will recognize this phrasal verb from the title and chorus of this popular <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/richyrocks.com\/coolenglish\/get-mine-yours-his-hers-etc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">taylor swift <\/a><\/strong>song.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Taylor Swift - We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together\" width=\"758\" height=\"426\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WA4iX5D9Z64?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>the final comment related to the guy who <em>got his mattress stolen<\/em> is at 3:25<\/p>\n<h4>u can keep the <em>cum-stained<\/em> mattress<\/h4>\n<p>a <em><strong>stain<\/strong><\/em> is <em>a dirty mark that is difficult to remove or can&#8217;t be removed<\/em>. \u00a0<em><strong>cum<\/strong><\/em> is <em>semen<\/em>. the message is that there is no need to return the mattress as\u00a0it is probably now <em>stained<\/em> as a result of the sex described in the song.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em><strong>afford<\/strong><\/em><\/a>\u00a0means <em>have enough money<\/em>. it is often used with can\/could and appears 3 times in the video between 3:30 and 4:00.<\/p>\n<p>during the same stretch (piece) of video,\u00a0<strong><em>pull over<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0is used twice. \u00a0it means <em>stop driving<\/em>, <em>go to the side of the older.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>the most recognized line from the song is\u00a0<em><strong>we ain&#8217;t never gettin older<\/strong><\/em>. <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/aint-def-richyrocks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em><strong>ain&#8217;t<\/strong><\/em><\/a> is a substitute for all negative forms of be, therefore\u00a0<strong><em>ain&#8217;t never<\/em><\/strong> is in fact a double negative. both ain&#8217;t and double negatives are considered to be poor grammar, but are used all the time\u00a0in popular music.<\/p>\n<p>in reality, i DON&#8217;T really believe millennials are lazier than previous generations. i think it&#8217;s healthy to not want to take a <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/shit-expressions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">shitty,<\/a> underpaid job and unfortunate when circumstances require it. \u00a0will millennials\u00a0be the first <em><strong>cyborg<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0(robotically enhanced) generation, thus changing the definition of what it means to get old? \u00a0<em><strong>time will tell<\/strong><\/em> (we will only know in the future), but i&#8217;m not <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/bet-definition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">betting<\/a> against it.<\/p>\n<h6><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5487\"
