donald trump<\/strong>\u00a0has been president for less than a week but it is becoming clear\u00a0how much love spanish speakers are going to get\u00a0from his administration.\u00a0\u00a0the spanish page of the whitehouse.gov<\/strong> website has been disabled<\/em><\/strong> (it’s not there anymore).<\/p>\n

on\u00a0sfgate<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0amy graff<\/strong> reported<\/a> that<\/p>\n

after donald trump was sworn in<\/em> as the 45th president of the united states, the url\u00a0for the spanish version of the site started turning up<\/em> an error message stating that “the page you’re looking for can’t be found<\/em>.”<\/h4>\n

was sworn in<\/strong><\/em> does not mention who did the swearing in<\/em>. \u00a0it’s passive voice<\/strong><\/a> (auxiliary be + past participle). swear in<\/strong> <\/em>is the process that officially made trump president. it is an irregular verb (swore, sworn<\/em>). turn up<\/strong><\/em> means find, present<\/em>. can’t be found<\/strong><\/em> is passive voice too.<\/p>\n

trump’s team had an explanation:<\/p>\n

at monday’s press briefing<\/em>, white house press secretary sean spicer said the disappearance of spanish content is only temporary<\/em> as the site undergoes a revamp.<\/em><\/h4>\n

a briefing<\/strong><\/em> is an informational meeting<\/em>. notice that temporary<\/strong><\/em> is the word used to indicate that the removal of the spanish site is not permanent<\/em>. \u00a0it’s a common spanglish to say temporal<\/em> instead of temporary<\/em>. spanglish is cool, but if u are speaking english, temporal<\/em> has a different meaning<\/a>. \u00a0a revamp<\/strong><\/em> is a major renovation<\/em>.<\/p>\n

sf gate was the only publication i found that referred to the whitehouse.gov spanish site as ‘temporarily’ down. most of the media just said that the trump administration got rid of it<\/a>. \u00a0this is what press secretary spicer actually said–<\/p>\n

we hit the ground running<\/em> on day one. there was a lot to do and we had done a lot of work on the website to make sure that we were prepared to get as much information up as fast as possible<\/em>. we are continuing to build out the website, both in the issue areas and then that area. but we’ve got the i.t. folks<\/em>\u00a0working overtime right now to continue to get all of that up to speed<\/em>. and trust me<\/em>, it’s just going to take a little bit more time, but we’re working piece by piece<\/em> to get that done.<\/h4>\n

hit the ground running<\/strong><\/em> means start well<\/em>. as much information<\/strong><\/em> means the maximum<\/em>. as fast as<\/strong><\/em>, the as adjective as comparative structure<\/a>, means the fastest way possible<\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0folks<\/strong><\/em><\/a> are people<\/em>.\u00a0up to speed<\/em><\/strong> means fully operational, ready to work. piece by piece<\/strong><\/em> indicates a slow process, one step at a time<\/em>.<\/p>\n

“trust me” might be a phrase that transfers seamlessly<\/a> from the trump campaign<\/a> to the trump presidency. \u00a0trump’s opponents criticized him for not presenting concrete policy solutions or objectives and telling voters<\/a> to trust<\/strong><\/em><\/a> him (believe, have confidence in).<\/p>\n

but how much trust should the public have in\u00a0the new president and his opinion about spanish in the united states? noah bierman<\/strong> at the la times<\/strong> reminded readers<\/a> that<\/p>\n

during a republican primary debate, trump lashed out<\/em> at former florida gov. jeb bush when he spoke spanish. “this is a country where we speak english,” trump said.<\/h4>\n
