the<strong> tiktok<\/strong> says, <em>must<\/em>, like all the <strong>past modals<\/strong> is tricky for english learners to apply correctly. but fortunately, christmas entertainment has provided four memorable examples of past modals. remember that <em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">must<\/span><\/em> in the past expresses the greatest\u00a0probability or the most logical explanation, NOT obligation.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>there are many, many representations, parodies, adaptations, etc. \u00a0of<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> <strong>charles dickens<\/strong><\/span>&#8216; <em><strong>a christmas carol<\/strong><\/em>, especially the main character in the novel, <strong>ebenezer scrooge<\/strong>. \u00a0<em><strong>scrooge<\/strong><\/em> has evolved into a word used to describe somone who resists the christmas spirit or has a negative attitude about celebrating christmas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4904\" carol<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0shows\u00a0a repentant <strong>ebenezer scrooge (played by alastair sim)\u00a0<\/strong>waking up on christmas morning after having been visited by three spirits who showed is unsure how much time has passed and fears he <em>may have missed<\/em> christmas day. when he realizes that he hasn&#8217;t, he says (at :33) that<\/p>\n<h4>the spirits <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em><strong>must have done <\/strong><\/em><\/span>everything in one night. of course. they can do anything, <em>can&#8217;t they<\/em>? of course they can.<\/h4>\n<p><em>they can do anything, can&#8217;t they?<\/em> is a <a href=\"http:\/\/richyrocks.com\/u-cant-handle-truth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tag question<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a hat.<\/em><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>it must&#8217;ve been ol&#8217; santa claus<\/strong><\/em> by <strong>harry connick jr<\/strong> describes a boy&#8217;s christmas eve sleigh ride with santa.\u00a0 but was it real? on christmas morning when his parents tell him the window in his room <em><strong>blew open overnight<\/strong><\/em> (was forced open by the wind during the night) he tells them it <em>must&#8217;ve been<\/em> the cat.\u00a0 but then the family realizes that the boy has santa&#8217;s big red hat, thus the title of the song &#x1f385;&#x1f3fd;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/F2TcCrf1Imo?si=X1TQ8vWep7W8l2xp\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>buck owens<\/strong>&#8216; christmas carol\u00a0<em><strong>santa looked a lot like daddy<\/strong><\/em> has two examples.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Buck Owens - Santa Looked a Lot Like Daddy\" width=\"758\" height=\"569\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>the song is written from the perspective of a boy who is skeptical about several details of santa&#8217;s visit to his house. \u00a0the chorus says&#8230;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>well, he didn&#8217;t come down the chimney<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4><strong>so mama <em>must have let him in<\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>and in the second verse (1:20), after explaining that he didn&#8217;t see any of santa&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/richyrocks.com\/rudolph-the-rest-of-the-reindeer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reindeer<\/a> or his <a href=\"https:\/\/richyrocks.com\/coolenglish\/santas-sleigh-other-sleighs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sleigh<\/a>, he concludes<\/p>\n<h4><strong>but he sure brought a lot of presents<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4><strong>so santa claus he <em>must have been<\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\n<h5><a he understands it is that probably his mama let santa in the house, and because he left a lot of presents, it had to be santa, not his daddy.<\/p>\n<p>can u give an example (christmas or otherwise) of
