<em>bursts<\/em> of interest, particularly after the election. users <em>looked up<\/em> fascism at a rate 400 percent higher in 2016 than in 2015.<\/h4>\n<p>merriam-webster&#8217;s on-line dictionary defines\u00a0<em><strong>misogyny<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0as <em>hatred of women<\/em>; and <em><strong>fascism<\/strong><\/em> is\u00a0<em>a political philosophy that puts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic\u00a0government headed by a\u00a0dictatorial\u00a0leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition<\/em>. \u00a0<em><strong>burst<\/strong><\/em> indicates <em>sudden and intense moments<\/em>. \u00a0<em><strong>look up<\/strong> <\/em>means <em>use the dictionary to find a unusually high interest in its definition over the course of 2016 has <em>propelled<\/em> it to the fourth-most-searched\u00a0word in the history of the dictionary\u2019s website.<\/h4>\n<p><em><strong>spike<\/strong><\/em> means <em>hit a high point<\/em>. <em><strong>propel<\/strong><\/em> means <em>push, power<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" article at the <strong>chicago tribune <em>taps<\/em><\/strong> (uses) two iconic 2016 events as representative of surreal:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/richyrocks.com\/chicago-cubs-win-the-world-series\/\" target=\"_blank\">the hometown cubs finally winning the world series<\/a>\u00a0and of course, <a href=\"http:\/\/richyrocks.com\/election-2016-we-will-keep-talking-about-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\">trump<\/a>.<\/article>\n<article><\/article>\n<h2>Between Cubs and Trump, Merriam-Webster&#8217;s &#8216;<em>surreal<\/em>&#8216; word of the year is <em>spot on<\/em><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"pb-root\" class=\"\">\n<section id=\"main-content\" class=\"col-xl-9 to describe winning an award<\/em><\/h6>\n<p>not to <em>brag<\/em> (<a href=\"http:\/\/richyrocks.com\/i-dont-mean-to-brag\/\" target=\"_blank\">which means i&#8217;m going to brag<\/a>) \u00a0but <strong>richyrocks.com<\/strong> was <em>spot on<\/em> with <em>surreal\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/richyrocks.com\/english-practice-from-an-acceptance-speech\/\" target=\"_blank\">all the way back in february 2016<\/a>. did we have any influence on merriam-webster&#8217;s decision? probably not. stevens explains<\/p>\n<h4><em>surreal<\/em> experienced three major <em>spikes<\/em> in 2016: in march, when the word <em>was used<\/em> during coverage of the terror attacks in brussels; in july, when it <em>was used<\/em> to describe a coup attempt in turkey and the terrorist attack in nice; and in november, when donald trump <em>was elected<\/em> president of the united states.<\/h4>\n<p><em><strong>was used<\/strong><\/em> and <em><strong>was elected<\/strong><\/em> are typical applications of the <a href=\"http:\/\/richyrocks.com\/tag\/passive-voice\/\" target=\"_blank\">passive voice<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium (gary turk, youtube)<\/em><\/h6>\n<p>what\u00a0other criteria does merriam-webster have for selecting their word of the year?<\/p>\n<h4>to select a word of the year, editors <em>zero in on<\/em> words that are suddenly hot, <em>rather than<\/em> words that receive the most overall <em>look-ups<\/em>. that means they <em>rule out<\/em> so-called &#8220;evergreen&#8221; words such as democracy, <em>fascism<\/em> and pragmatic, which are <em>looked up<\/em> frequently year-round, <em>regardless<\/em> of specific news events.<\/h4>\n<p><em><strong>zero in on<\/strong><\/em> means<em> focus on.\u00a0<\/em><em><strong>rather than<\/strong><\/em> means <em>instead of,\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0it shows a <em>preference.\u00a0<\/em><em><strong>rule out\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>means <em>decide against<\/em>. <a href=\"http:\/\/richyrocks.com\/should-the-iowa-caucus-be-first\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em><strong>regardless<\/strong><\/em><\/a> means<em> it didn&#8217;t make any difference<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5057\" src=\"http:\/\/richyrocks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/blue-velvet-surrealism-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/richyrocks.com\/coolenglish\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/blue-velvet-surrealism-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/richyrocks.com\/coolenglish\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/blue-velvet-surrealism.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<h6><em>david lynch&#8217;s <strong>blue velvet<\/strong> is an example of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">surrealistic<\/span> cinema.<\/em><\/h6>\n<p>it was surprising to see heidi stevens list fascism as an <em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">evergreen<\/span><\/em> word after all the attention it received in november, but it&#8217;s fine that merriam-webster\u00a0opted for <em>surreal<\/em> instead. as ben guarino observed\u00a0in his article for the washington post, fascism would have <strong><em>rounded out<\/em> <\/strong>(completed)<\/p>\n<h4>a cluster of <em>bleak<\/em> words for\u00a0the year 2016. <em>across the pond<\/em>, the oxford dictionaries announced that \u201c<em>post-truth<\/em>\u201d was this year\u2019s word. the phrase does not mean beyond\u00a0fact, but <em>rather<\/em> the\u00a0sense that objective truth may be less relevant than appeals to emotion or belief. <em>paranoid<\/em>\u00a0occupied the brains at cambridge dictionary. and dictionary.com chose <em>xenophobia<\/em>\u00a0\u2014 the fear of strangers, foreigners or the alien \u2014\u00a0as its word of the year.<\/h4>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1483230281688_22163\"><em id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1483230281688_22164\"><strong id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1483230281688_22165\">bleak<\/strong><\/em> means <em id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1483230281688_22166\">without hope<\/em>. <strong id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1483230281688_22167\"><em id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1483230281688_22168\">across the pond<\/em><\/strong> means <em>on the other side of the atlantic ocean<\/em>.<em id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1483230281688_22169\"><strong id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1483230281688_22170\"> post-truth<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0references not only donald trump&#8217;s campaigning style, but also false promises that helped the <strong><a id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1483230281688_22171\" href=\"http:\/\/richyrocks.com\/wtf-is-a-brexit\/\" target=\"_blank\">brexit<\/a><\/strong> to pass in june of this year.<\/p>\n<p><strong id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1483230281688_22173\">cambridge dictionary<\/strong>&#8216;s <em id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1483230281688_22174\">bleak<\/em> word choice, <em id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1483230281688_22175\"><strong id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1483230281688_22176\">paranoid<\/strong><\/em>, at least has a cool psychedelic video associated with it<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"BLACK SABBATH - &quot;Paranoid&quot; (Official Video)\" width=\"758\" height=\"569\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hkXHsK4AQPs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1483230281688_22172\" dir=\"ltr\" data-setdir=\"false\">was \u00a02016 a <em id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1483230281688_22230\">surreal<\/em> year for u? are<em id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1483230281688_22231\">\u00a0fascism, post-truth, xenophobia, paranoid<\/em>\u00a0or <em id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1483230281688_22232\">misogyny<\/em> better choices for word of the year?\u00a0is there another word that catches the essence of 2016 more accurately?
