just a week ago, the chicago cubs ended their 108 year drought<\/a> by winning the world series with\u00a0a thrilling<\/strong><\/em><\/a> (exciting), nerve-racking<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0(tense) game 7 victory. this week’s “it will never happen” moment, donald trump<\/strong> winning the u.s. presidential election, was not as much fun.<\/p>\n

on election day i sent an email to subscribers admitting that though i tried, it wasn’t possible to avoid<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>(not do it)\u00a0talking about donald trump these past 16 months or in class. \u00a0the heading of the mail was<\/p>\n

i definitely got it\u00a0wrong. i wasn’t alone, but i was wrong.<\/p>\n

it’s strange that trump won the election despite<\/a> getting less votes than hillary. \u00a0the president of the united states is actually<\/strong><\/em><\/a>\u00a0(in fact) not elected by the\u00a0popular vote<\/em><\/strong>, (one person= one vote) but by\u00a0the electoral vote<\/strong><\/em>. every state has a number of electoral votes assigned to it based on population. there are 538 electoral votes up for grabs<\/em><\/strong> (available, competed for), and 270 are required to be elected president.<\/p>\n

yesterday somebody here in mexico identifying me as a gringo jokingly <\/strong><\/em>(as a joke) asked me if i’m happy about the result. jesus, no. \u00a0i was hoping this election was going to be a repudiation<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0(rejection) of the xenophobic, impractical and unsustainable ideas trump’s campaign promoted. \u00a0we’ll \u00a0have to wait a few more years for these ugly ideas to die.<\/p>\n

i was also asked how the american people could elect an asshole like trump. \u00a0the obvious answer is a lot of americans identify with an asshole. in addition, it’s a shock\u00a0to see that 53% of white women and\u00a020-30% of latinos voted for trump, assuming we can trust any of the exit polls<\/em><\/strong> (surveys of people who just finished voting). the polls that predicted the winner of\u00a0the election were not so reliable<\/strong><\/em> (dependable, trustworthy).<\/p>\n

another post-election query i got this week was, how do americans perceive mexicans? with\u00a0the broad\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>(general, wide), negative anger and resentment of a donald trump speech? \u00a0there is clearly a significant percentage of americans who don’t try any harder than that. \u00a0at the same time, protestors in the u.s. are now marching in the streets, carrying pictures of trump and shouting NOT MY PRESIDENT.<\/p>\n

i’m one step ahead of my paisanos<\/em> (fellow americans) who vowed<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(promised) to leave the u.s.\u00a0if trump won. i already live in ol mexico. your move, miley cyrus.<\/p>\n

it’s hard not to get emotional about politics. there was emotion behind my merry<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0(happy) proclamation on\u00a0election day. \u00a0i accept i was on the wrong side of this election.\u00a0we will definitely continue to fucking talk about trump.<\/p>\n
