108 years ago! that all changed at the beginning of this month. \u00a0paul sullivan<\/strong> at the chicago tribune<\/strong> wrote<\/a><\/p>\n

the most epic drought<\/em> in sports history is over, and the\u00a0cubs\u00a0are world champions.<\/h4>\n

it was a big deal earlier this year when the cleveland cavaliers of the nba ended a 52-year drought<\/strong><\/em><\/a> during which no professional sports team in cleveland won a championship. \u00a0the cubs’ 108 year drought<\/em> was more than\u00a0double that, and ironically came against the cleveland<\/span> indians<\/span><\/strong>, who now have the longest championship drought<\/em> in major league\u00a0baseball at 68 years.<\/p>\n

game 7, the final game of the world series, was truly extraordinary.\u00a0sullivan reported<\/p>\n

after blowing<\/em> an eighth-inning lead in\u00a0stunning<\/em> fashion, the cubs bounced back<\/em> in the 10th with run-scoring hits from ben zobrist\u00a0and miguel montero.<\/h4>\n

blow<\/strong><\/em><\/a> means having an advantage and losing it<\/em>. \u00a0the cubs were ahead 6-3 in the eighth inning and it felt like they would win.\u00a0but the indians tied<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0the game (made it even) with three runs, stunning<\/em> <\/strong><\/a>(shocking, surprising) the cubs and their fans. bounce back<\/em><\/strong><\/a> means chicago\u00a0recovered, showed resiliency. \u00a0<\/em>cleveland scored a run in the bottom of the 10th but the cubs held on<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0(persisted, survived) to win 8-7.<\/p>\n

a few cub fans might have thought this when the indians tied<\/span> the game in the 8th inning. the cubs bounced back<\/span> though.<\/em><\/h6>\n

one of the most remarkable\u00a0storylines of this unforgettable world series was the surprise return of cub outfielder\/catcher kyle schwarber<\/strong>. schwarber hadn’t played since the third game of the season. \u00a0sullivan explained<\/p>\n

the schwarber comeback<\/em> was so unbelievable, so corny<\/em>, even disney wouldn’t have dared touch it<\/em>. after going down<\/em> with a torn acl\u00a0in the third game of the season after an outfield collision with [teammate dexter] fowler, he spent the entire season rehabbing and hoping he could make it back for the end.<\/h4>\n

not only did he make it back, he led\u00a0the team in hitting with a .412 average for the series. corny<\/em><\/strong><\/a> means overly sentimental<\/em>. wouldn’t have dared<\/a> touch i<\/em><\/strong>t is a hypothetical in the past (3rd conditional<\/a>). it gives the idea that disney would not try to make a movie about schwarber’s comeback<\/strong> <\/em>(rehabilitation\/return) because even though disney is\u00a0famous for corny<\/em>, inspirational movies, schwarber’s\u00a0story is just too improbable. go down<\/strong><\/em><\/a> refers to schwarber’s injury.<\/p>\n

plenty of emotion, corny<\/em> or not, surrounded the cubs long-anticipated championship.<\/p>\n

sullivan described it like this in the tribune<\/p>\n

tears<\/em> flowed across cubs nation after the final out, and fans responded with the world’s biggest group hug, remembering all the loved ones who could only imagine what it would be like to experience this moment of pure bliss<\/em>…..the road trips to cemeteries commence……caps, balls, pennants<\/em> and news clippings<\/em> will be placed<\/em> on markers of loved ones, letting them know they did it. the cubs did it.<\/h4>\n

tears<\/strong><\/em> is pronounced like beers<\/em>, not bears<\/span> <\/em>(chicago’s nfl team. :D). bliss<\/strong><\/em><\/a> is extreme happiness, ecstasy.<\/em> fans buy\u00a0pennants<\/strong><\/em> to\u00a0show support for their team. news clippings<\/strong><\/em> are stories cut out of newspapers<\/em>, they are less common today\u00a0now that the internet is where people go for news. will be placed<\/strong> <\/em>is future passive voice<\/a><\/strong>. the subject (family and friends of the deceased cubs fans) is not mentioned but implied.<\/p>\n

sullivan’s description sounds similar to d\u00eda de los muertos<\/em> celebrations in m\u00e9xico. in fact, it was an amazing mystical coincidence that the final two games of the world series actually took place on november 1 and 2, the night and day that d\u00eca de los muertos is celebrated here\u00a0in mexico.<\/p>\n

sullivan called the spiritual displays by cub fans…<\/p>\n

touching<\/em> tributes to those who taught<\/em> us to love a baseball team through thick and thin<\/em><\/h4>\n

this is a useful selection of words. taught<\/em><\/strong> is the irregular\u00a0past tense of teach<\/em>, but often i’ve heard students mistakenly answer that it’s touch<\/em>. \u00a0touching<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0means\u00a0emotional<\/em>. through thick and thin<\/em><\/strong> means in good times and bad.<\/em><\/p>\n

i’ve imagined this night so many times and never could’ve pictured<\/em> the roller coaster<\/em> of emotions that was this game 7….. it was the best game of any kind I’ve ever been to in my life — and would have been<\/em> even if the cubs hadn’t won<\/em>.<\/h4>\n

it’s common to use a roller coaster<\/strong><\/em> as a metaphor for a situation that evokes strong, opposite emotions. could’ve pictured<\/strong><\/em> and would have been<\/em><\/strong> are additional examples of third conditional, and when used with if<\/em>, past perfect<\/strong> can also indicate a hypotheitcal situation in the past (if<\/span> the cubs hadn’t won<\/span><\/em><\/strong>).<\/p>\n

silly<\/strong><\/em><\/a> means unwise<\/a>, crazy<\/em>. every single<\/em><\/strong><\/a> gives emphasis to the fact that the world series is an annual event. after all<\/strong><\/em><\/a> is ultimately, at\u00a0the end<\/em>.<\/p>\n
