last\u00a0week i opened netflix to catch episode 11 of the first season of better call saul<\/strong><\/em>, the prequel spinoff <\/em>\u00a0to\u00a0breaking bad<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0it was disappointing to find out<\/a>\u00a0that season 1\u00a0only has 10 episodes <\/p>\n

an ad for fictional lawyer saul goodman. the opening scene of s01 e03\u00a0could be called better call chuck.<\/em><\/strong><\/h6>\n

better call saul<\/em> is a spin-off<\/strong><\/em> because the title character, saul, appeared as mr. white<\/a> & jesse pinkman’s lawyer on breaking bad.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

prequel<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0means that better call saul<\/em> is a story that happens before<\/span> breaking bad.<\/em><\/p>\n

the show’s title is a good example of how better<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0can be used as a modal auxiliary verb<\/strong> for strong recommendations.\u00a0better call saul<\/em> sounds like something that\u00a0someone who \u00a0needs a lawyer would say.<\/p>\n

heeeeere’s johnny, uh, jimmy… saul? \u00a0<\/em><\/h6>\n

the opening of episode 3, titled nacho<\/strong><\/em>, is a flashback<\/strong><\/em> (a time before the rest of the episode) to a conversation between brothers\u00a0jimmy and chuck mcgill in cook county jail in chicago.\u00a0jimmy mcgill (aka saul) has been arrested for what he calls a chicago sunroof\u00a0<\/em>and his\u00a0brother chuck, a lawyer from albuquerque, new mexico, is there to help. chuck is clearly disappointed in jimmy.<\/p>\n

when jimmy\u00a0is brought in by police he announces himself to chuck by saying “heeeere’s johnny”. this famous line was used to introduce tv host johnny carson<\/strong> on his popular u.s. television program the tonight show<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n
