during the\u00a0extremely long and ugly u.s. presidential election of 2016, there were a couple\u00a0moments of art. the anarchist collective INDECLINE commisioned the artist ginger<\/span><\/strong> to create six naked statues of republican candidate donald trump.<\/p>\n

the group unveiled<\/em> life-size statues of trump in the nude<\/a>… in public spaces in new york, san francisco, los angeles, cleveland and seattle.<\/h4>\n

unveil<\/strong><\/em> means reveal, present<\/em>. it is often used when the public sees a work of art for the first time.<\/p>\n

far from flattering<\/em>…..they\u2019re oddly<\/em> shaped, lack<\/em> one key element of the male reproductive system and dramatically play down<\/em> another<\/h4>\n

flattering<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0means\u00a0positive<\/em>. far from flattering<\/span><\/em> means the statues don’t make trump look good at all<\/a>. oddly<\/strong><\/em> means the bodies of\u00a0the statues have a weird<\/em> shape. lack<\/em><\/strong><\/a> refers to the statues not having<\/em> testicles; in fact they are titled the emperor has no balls<\/span><\/strong>. balls<\/em><\/strong><\/a> is a synonym for testicles. \u00a0play down<\/strong><\/em> means under-emphasize the importance<\/em>; it is a \u00a0reference to the trump statues having a very small wiener<\/a>. the –cally<\/strong><\/em> at the end of dramatically<\/strong><\/em> should be pronounced as one syllable, clee<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

holley reported that ginger said it was a challenge<\/em><\/strong> (difficult, a test)…..<\/p>\n

figuring out<\/em> how to create unsettling<\/em> body parts in a realistic fashion, a process that required extensive online research. \u201cIf<\/em> somebody were<\/em> to look at my browser history, it would be<\/em> a little disturbing, turns out<\/em> there\u2019s not too many google results for \u2018saggy<\/em> old man butt.\u2019\u201d<\/h4>\n

figure out<\/strong><\/em><\/a> means analyze and solve<\/em>. unsettling<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0body parts\u00a0cause an uncomfortable feeling<\/em>. if somebody were to look at my browser history….\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>is a great example of how to express a hypothetical situaiton (second conditional). turn out<\/strong><\/em><\/a> is like happen<\/em>\u00a0or indicates \u00a0a result<\/em>. saggy<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>is the opposite of firm<\/em>.<\/p>\n

used 300 pounds of clay and silicone to create the statues and said the candidate\u2019s mouth ended up<\/em> being his biggest sculpting challenge. the goal was to give him the<\/em> slightest<\/em> hint<\/em> of a scowl<\/em> \u2014 a \u201cconstipated look\u201d \u2014 that hinted<\/em> at trump\u2019s implicit frustration with contemporary america<\/h4>\n

end up<\/strong><\/em><\/a> is a tough\u00a0phrasal verb to apply when english is your second language. \u00a0it means reaching<\/em> or completing<\/em> but also can include a component of doubt<\/em> or surprise<\/em>. slight<\/em><\/strong> means a little<\/em>. a\u00a0hint<\/em><\/strong><\/a>\u00a0is a suggestion<\/em> or indication<\/em>.\u00a0a scowl<\/strong><\/em> is an angry face<\/em>.<\/p>\n

trump’s constipated scowl<\/span>, like his hat,\u00a0hints<\/span> that for him contemporary america is not great.<\/em><\/h6>\n

it may come as a surprise that the man who created these unflattering<\/em> images of donald trump actually considered voting for him. however…..<\/p>\n

the more familiar he became with trump, the more that familiarity bred contempt.<\/em> \u201cstarting on the project and looking at his face day in and day out when i\u2019d come home<\/em>, I began to build up<\/em> some resentment. the straw that broke the camel\u2019s back<\/em> was when he made fun of the disabled reporter from the new york times.<\/h4>\n

familiarity breeds contempt<\/strong><\/em> means knowing someone or something better can lead to negative feelings<\/em> (comtempt<\/em><\/strong>).in this case, being around the trump statues made ginger start to dislike trump.\u00a0breed<\/strong><\/em> means reproduce. build up<\/em><\/strong><\/a> means accumulate<\/em>. would<\/em><\/strong> in this example\u00a0is used to show\u00a0a repetitive action in the past (coming home to the trump statues). the straw that broke the camel’s back<\/em><\/strong>, or the last (final) straw<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0is the last in a string of irritations that creates a loss of patience. \u00a0donald trump offended a lot of people over the course of his campaign, but it was when he made fun of<\/a> a reporter with a disability that ginger realized he couldn’t vote for him.<\/p>\n

after their unveiling<\/em>, local authorities removed the statues almost immediately in cleveland and new york; the next day in san francisco. an art collector rescued the naked trump in l.a. and local art fans did the same\u00a0in seattle. more naked trump statues appeared in new jersey and miami in september.<\/p>\n

in response to ginger’s naked trump statues, a naked hillary clinton statue went up in new york in october. it was taken down within a few hours.<\/p>\n
