suffered a meltdown<\/em> of [their]\u00a0passenger-reservations computer system monday, causing hundreds of canceled flights and shining another light on<\/em> the airline industry\u2019s aging<\/em> technology.<\/h4>\n

meltdown<\/strong><\/em> is total failure<\/em>. \u00a0shining a light on<\/strong><\/em> means exposing<\/em> or revealing<\/em>. aging<\/strong><\/em> means old<\/em> or getting older<\/em> (related to the word age<\/em>).<\/p>\n

raise questions<\/strong><\/em> refers to additional doubts generated by this crisis. too<\/em><\/strong> means airlines in the u.s. have become excessively<\/em> large and excessively<\/em> dependent<\/em> (reliant<\/strong><\/em>) on technology that is at least 20 years old.<\/p>\n

behind each of the four big players in the u.s. airline industry \u2014 american, united, delta and southwest \u2014 there is a tangled<\/em> computer system pieced together<\/em> after decades of mergers<\/em> that married mismatched<\/em> networks.<\/h4>\n

in the washington post\u00a0article, rick seaney<\/strong>, creator of the travel website farecompare.com<\/strong> broke down why this system failure was\u00a0weird<\/strong><\/em> (strange).<\/p>\n

anytime you have a systemwide outage<\/em>, it either<\/em> has to be one of the core systems or<\/em> some sort of networking glitch<\/em>. \u00a0all computer systems have redundancy<\/em>. typically, almost all companies \u2014 especially if you have credit card data \u2014 are required to be spread out<\/em>, sometimes across different countries, to make sure that basically [their network] never goes down<\/em>.<\/h4>\n

one of the experts, bijan vasigh<\/strong>, a professor at embry-riddle aeronautical university<\/strong>, pointed out<\/a><\/p>\n

it could have been worse<\/em>. imagine if this event had happened<\/em> during thanksgiving or christmas; this would be catastrophic for the airline.<\/h4>\n

as delta\u2019s issues come just three weeks after a failed router at southwest airlines caused delays and cancellations, drusch said<\/p>\n

this is a wake-up<\/em> call for all the airlines.<\/h4>\n
