michael jordan<\/strong>, the greatest basketball player ever and current owner of the charlotte hornets<\/strong><\/span>, released a statement earlier this week\u00a0about the combined problem of guns, police and race relations in the united states. \u00a0jordan has been cautious\u00a0to talk about social issues in the past, so his comments\u00a0were widely reported in the media.<\/p>\n

jordan said he can no longer stay silent.<\/em><\/h6>\n

i was raised by<\/em> parents who taught<\/em> me to love and respect people regardless<\/em> of their race or background, so i am saddened and frustrated by the divisive rhetoric and racial tensions that seem to be getting worse<\/em> as of late<\/em>. i know this country is better than that, and i can no longer stay silent. we need to find solutions that ensure<\/em><\/a> people of color receive fair<\/em><\/a> and equal treatment AND that police officers \u2013 who put their lives on the line<\/em> <\/a>every day to protect us all \u2013 are respected and supported.<\/h4>\n

raise\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>is the action of parents caring for and educating children until they are adults<\/em>. it’s often used in passive voice<\/strong> (auxiliar verb be + past participle), as it is here. taught<\/em><\/strong> is the irregular past tense of teach<\/em>. get worse<\/strong><\/em> means it is becoming a bigger problem<\/em>. as of late<\/em><\/strong> is another way to say lately<\/em>, recently<\/em>. \u00a0ensure<\/em><\/strong> means guarantee<\/em>, fair<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0is related to justice and on the line<\/em><\/strong> means at risk<\/em>.<\/p>\n

jordan’s\u00a0final observation is that<\/p>\n

the problems we face didn\u2019t happen overnight and they won\u2019t be solved<\/em> tomorrow, but if we all work together, we can foster<\/em> greater understanding, positive change and create a more peaceful world for ourselves, our children, our families and our communities.<\/h4>\n

won’t be solved<\/strong><\/em> is another example of passive voice, this time in the future. \u00a0no subject is mentioned, though it’s implied that american society working together is who will find a solution. foster<\/strong><\/em> means promote, develop<\/em>.<\/p>\n

carmelo said it was briliant but also about time<\/span> that jordan stepped up.<\/span><\/em><\/h6>\n

on the same day, nba all-star and u.s. olympian carmelo anthony<\/strong> of the new york knicks<\/strong><\/span> also\u00a0brought attention to the problem through his participation in a forum called leadership together: a conversation with our sons and daughters<\/strong>. \u00a0the conference took place<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(happened) in los angeles and included various community leaders. \u00a0talking to the\u00a0press after the event, carmelo reflected on what jordan said.<\/p>\n

i thought it was brilliant and about time<\/em> that he stepped up<\/em>, said what he said. because at the end of the day<\/em><\/a>, amongst<\/em> us, he is our face. he is an african-american– a very powerful african-american, so for him to step up<\/em> in the midst of<\/em> these times right now, it was very big on his behalf<\/em>. it’s not always about the money, but for him to step up<\/em> and put his money where his mouth at<\/em>, the timing<\/em> was perfect.<\/h4>\n

about time<\/em><\/strong> expresses that jordan should have spoken before<\/em>,\u00a0his opinion on the topic was overdue.\u00a0step up<\/strong><\/em> means do something important<\/em>, take responsibility. at the end of the day<\/strong><\/em> means finally<\/em>\u00a0or most importantly<\/em>. amongst<\/strong> <\/em>(also among) indicates being\u00a0part of a group. in the midst of<\/em><\/strong> is the same as\u00a0in the middle<\/em> of. \u00a0on his behalf<\/em><\/strong> refers to jordan.\u00a0\u00a0it could be substituted\u00a0with “of him”.<\/p>\n

put your money where your mouth is<\/strong><\/em> an interesting choice of phrase\u00a0here. usually it is used to say backup what u are saying. anthony is in fact impressed that jordan spoke out<\/em><\/strong> (give an opinion publicly) on the topic more than by the money he donated. timing<\/strong><\/em> is similar to sychronicity.<\/p>\n
