three things i wanted to talk about here on richyrocks.com<\/strong>: police brutality against black people in the u.s., pokemon go<\/strong> and iowa hawkeye football<\/strong><\/a>, all came together in an unusual incident this summer that thankfully\u00a0ended\u00a0without violence.\u00a0iowa hawkeye defensive tackle faith ekakitie<\/strong> was surrounded and searched by iowa city police officers while walking in a local park, listening to music and playing pokemon go.<\/p>\n

ekakitie\u00a0fit the profile<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>(had the same physical characterisitics)\u00a0of a fugitive criminal supposedly on the loose<\/a> in\u00a0the area.\u00a0watch footage<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(film) of the confrontation\u00a0from one of the police officer’s body cams\u00a0here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

from the police officers point of view, all they knew was that a bank had just been robbed<\/em>. the suspect was a large black male, wearing<\/em> all black.<\/h4>\n

had just been robbed<\/strong><\/em> is past perfect<\/strong>. \u00a0it is also passive voice<\/strong> (been robbed)–>there is no\u00a0mention of who robbed the bank. \u00a0wear<\/em><\/strong><\/a> is for\u00a0talking about what clothes people have on. \u00a0if spanish is your first language it’s a common mistake to say\u00a0use<\/em>\u00a0instead of wear<\/em>, based on the spanish verb usar<\/em>. don’t do it \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

ekakitie explains that the police asked him to<\/p>\n

turn around<\/em> and place my hands up. i do not comply<\/em>, they ask again, and again no response from me. so they all draw<\/em> their guns and begin to slowly approach.<\/h4>\n

the police asked faith to turn around<\/strong><\/em> becuase they were approaching him from behind. \u00a0comply<\/em><\/strong><\/a> means follow instructions. \u00a0draw<\/em><\/strong> means the police pointed their guns at<\/em> faith.<\/p>\n

ekakitie feels the reports we read and hear about this type of conflict are not always accurate<\/em> <\/strong>(correct)<\/p>\n

in this situation, what the media would fail to let people know is that the suspect had his headphones in the entire time the police officers approached him initially.<\/h4>\n

he\u00a0recognizes the danger he was in, but\u00a0also analyzes how his experience connects to what is happening in society as a whole.<\/p>\n

misunderstandings<\/em> happen all the time and just like that things can go south<\/em> very quickly.\u00a0it is extremely sad that our society has brainwashed<\/em> us all to the point where we can\u2019t feel safe being approached<\/em> by the police officers in our respective communities.\u00a0not all police officers are out to get you<\/em>, but at the same time, not all people who fit a criminal profile are criminals.<\/h4>\n

misunderstanding<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0is failed understanding<\/em>. go south<\/em><\/strong> means become a bad situation<\/em>, deteriorate<\/em>.\u00a0brainwash\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>means indoctrinate, persuade by aggressive or extreme means<\/em>. being approached<\/em><\/strong> is another example of passive voice. out to get u<\/em><\/strong> means in pursuit of<\/em>, trying to catch and\/or destroy<\/em>.<\/p>\n

in spite of<\/strong><\/em> (not affected by)\u00a0what ekakitie went through<\/strong><\/em><\/a> (experienced), he has\u00a0maintained a gracious and forgiving attitude.<\/p>\n

i would like the thank the iowa city police department for handling a sensitive situation very professionally. i would also urge people to be more aware<\/em> of their surroundings because clearly i wasn\u2019t. lastly, i would urge us all to at least to attempt to unlearn some of the prejudices that we have learned about each other and now plague our minds and our society.<\/h4>\n
