pay)\u00a0<strong>oracle<\/strong> anything for using their <em><strong>apis<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0(<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">a<\/span>pplication <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">p<\/span>rogram <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">i<\/span>nterface) to build the <strong>android<\/strong> platform. \u00a0this recent\u00a0legal victory will probably not\u00a0bring an end to the\u00a0<strong><em>litigation<\/em><\/strong> (legal action) between the two silicon valley companies. oracle is expected to<a href=\"http:\/\/richyrocks.com\/snoop-dogg-on-the-decision-to-overturn-tom-bradys-suspension\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong> appeal<\/strong><\/em><\/a> (ask for a different decision from a higher court), which would extend <a href=\"http:\/\/richyrocks.com\/oracles-lawsuit-against-google-drags-on\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a legal process that started in 2010<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-3560 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/richyrocks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/google-v-oracle-300x180.jpg\" <strong>vox.com<\/strong> notes<\/a> that\u00a0the general public is not particularly interested in this legal battle.<\/p>\n<h4>the immediate <em>stakes<\/em> in the case are not that interesting for anyone but the companies involved \u2014 <em>either<\/em> google will have to write oracle a big check <em>or<\/em> it won&#8217;t.<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/richyrocks.com\/english-practice-from-the-2016-rose-bowl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong>stakes<\/strong><\/em><\/a>\u00a0are\u00a0<em>consequences<\/em> of the case or <em>what is being disputed<\/em>. <strong><em>either <\/em><\/strong>and<strong><em> or<\/em><\/strong> are presenting two alternatives.<\/p>\n<h6><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" were popular during the 2000s. the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">stakes were high<\/span> because players played for real money.<\/em><\/h6>\n<p>public disinterest <em><strong>notwithstanding<\/strong><\/em> (in spite of it), lee elaborates these details about the lawsuit&#8230;<\/p>\n<h4>google wanted people who wrote programs in the popular programming language java to be able to reuse their code in android apps. to do that, google had to <em>ensure<\/em> that java code written for other purposes ran exactly the same on android. but negotiations with the company behind java, sun microsystems (which was later acquired by oracle), <em>broke down<\/em>, so google decided to create <em>its own<\/em> version of java <em>from scratch<\/em>.\u00a0google&#8217;s version of java didn&#8217;t reuse any code from oracle&#8217;s version. but to <em>ensure<\/em> compatibility, google&#8217;s version used functions with the same names and functionality.<\/h4>\n<p><strong><em>ensure<\/em><\/strong><em>\u00a0<\/em>means <em>guarantee<\/em> or <em>be sure<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h6><em><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" \u00a0<strong><em>its own<\/em><\/strong> means google built a version of java <em>themselves<\/em>. <em><strong>from scratch<\/strong><\/em> is <em>starting from zero, from the beginning, with rel=\"noopener\"><strong>wired.com<\/strong><\/a> explains<\/p>\n<h4>programmers routinely borrow apis from existing products <em>either<\/em> to <em>ensure<\/em> compatibility between products <em>or<\/em> simply to make it easier to learn a new product. an oracle victory <em>could have seriously curtailed<\/em> that practice, <em>hindering<\/em> the creation of new software.<\/h4>\n<p><b><i>curtail<\/i><\/b><i>\u00a0<\/i>(cut back) and <em><strong>hinder<\/strong><\/em> (create problems for) are related ideas and synonyms in some companies and individual programmers may <em>shy away<\/em> <em>from<\/em> entirely reasonable projects because of the risk of <em>litigation<\/em>.<\/h4>\n<p><strong><em>shy away from<\/em><\/strong> rel=\"noopener\"><strong> it wire<\/strong><\/a> also recognized the importance of the legal decision to copyright apis<\/p>\n<h4><em>prior to<\/em> the google-oracle case, apis were not covered by copyright&#8230;.[and it has]<em>queered the pitch<\/em> for all developers.<\/h4>\n<p><em><strong>prior to<\/strong><\/em> means before. <em><strong>queer the pitch<\/strong><\/em> is a very british sounding phrase that means the decision <em>ruined developers opportunities<\/em>. varghese describes the issue, as it applies to developers, like this<\/p>\n<h4>google won the recent case against oracle because it has <em>deep pockets<\/em> and is able to hire highly-paid lawyers to defend its use of others&#8217; code.\u00a0not all developers <em>can afford<\/em> lawyers who can represent them <em>were they to be sued<\/em> for copying apis in the course of developing software.<\/h4>\n<p><em><strong>deep pockets<\/strong><\/em> means <em>they have a lot of money<\/em>. \u00a0<em><strong>afford<\/strong><\/em> refers to having enough money. \u00a0it is often used with can\/can&#8217;t. \u00a0<em><strong>were they to be sued<\/strong><\/em> is a hypothetical situation (second conditional&#8211;were IS NOT past tense here). <em><strong>sue<\/strong><\/em> is <em>legally demanding money to pay for damages<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h6><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"
