oracle<\/strong>‘s $9 billion lawsuit<\/strong> <\/em>(pronounced 9 billion dollar<\/span> lawsuit<\/em>) against google<\/strong> may not be resolved any time soon. \u00a0the suit<\/em><\/strong> (legal action) stems from<\/a> google’s use of java apis<\/strong><\/em> (a<\/span>pplication p<\/span>rogram i<\/span>nterface) to develop the android platform.\u00a0kate conger<\/strong> at <\/strong> reports<\/p>\n

alphabet<\/a> ceo and google co-founder larry page defended his company\u2019s\u00a0development of the android platform during an ongoing <\/em>legal battle with oracle. oracle sued<\/em> google in 2010, claiming<\/em> that android developers copied sections of proprietary code from java. google has maintained that the code in question was open source<\/em> and free for its engineers to use, and that the implementation of the java code in android was transformative enough……to fall under<\/em> fair<\/em> use.<\/h4>\n

page testified that he had little knowledge of the engineering details of android that are at issue in this case, despite<\/a> the fact that the lawsuit<\/em> has now dragged on<\/em><\/a> over the course of five years. however<\/em>, he disputed oracle\u2019s assertion that google stole its intellectual property when it used java declaring code<\/em> in android.<\/h4>\n

owe<\/strong> <\/em>means has a debt<\/em>, must pay<\/em>. \u00a0MAKE SURE u distinguish between owe<\/em> and own.\u00a0<\/em>own<\/strong><\/em> refers to holding a property<\/em> and is almost\u00a0the opposite of owe<\/em>. in this scenario, oracle believes that they own<\/em> the java apis and google owes<\/em> them $9 billion<\/strong><\/em> (pronounced nine billion dollars<\/span>).\u00a0\u00a0on the other hand, larry page argues the java apis google used to build android were\u00a0open-source<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n

pamela samuelson<\/strong>, a law profesor at the university of california<\/span><\/strong>, berkeley\u00a0\u00a0explains<\/p>\n

the open-source<\/em> community will\u00a0heave a huge sigh of relief<\/em> if google wins, and will be very worried if oracle wins.<\/h4>\n

heave\u00a0(or breathe)\u00a0a sigh of relief<\/strong><\/em> is an expression that means being able to relax because a negative prospect\u00a0has ended or been avoided<\/em>. if the impact of an oracle victory is a reduction of open-source codes, smaller companies with less cash will have a more difficult time surviving.<\/p>\n
