republican presidential candidate donald trump<\/strong><\/span> couldn’t win the iowa caucus<\/a>, but last week during\u00a0a high school basketball playoff game in iowa we got a\u00a0glimpse<\/em><\/strong> (short, quick view) of\u00a0how\u00a0his comments on immigration\u00a0are affecting\u00a0emotion and attitude in the u.s. \u00a0<\/span>fans of the dallas center-grimes mustangs<\/strong><\/span> chanted<\/a> “trump” in an effort to\u00a0taunt<\/strong><\/em> (provoke) and degrade<\/em><\/strong> (insult) their rival the perry bluejays<\/strong><\/span>.

perry has\u00a0a significant hispanic population that includes some of the bluejay players.\u00a0the\u00a0state of iowa has a population that is roughly<\/strong><\/em> (approxiamtely) 5% hispanic; perry is 35% hispanic.<\/p>\n

perry high school bucks the trend<\/em> of what is typically found in a rural iowa setting……\u00a0they embrace<\/em> that diversity and it shows on the basketball court with players of latino, native-american and african-american heritage.<\/h4>\n

buck the trend<\/strong><\/em> means perry is atypical<\/em>, they don’t represent normal tendencies<\/em>. embrace<\/a><\/em><\/strong> means accept<\/em> and value.<\/em><\/p>\n

we’re all aware<\/a> of racism. it’s alive and well<\/em>. in small portions, but it’s alive and well.<\/h4>\n

alive and well<\/em><\/strong> is used to emphasize that racism is NOT dead. it still exists, and in fact thrives<\/strong><\/em> (does well, flourishes).<\/p>\n

a checklist of sportsmanship<\/em> traits<\/em>\u00a0[that]\u00a0greets everyone who walks into perry high school’s gymnasium. they hope other schools can follow suit<\/em>, and if not, they hope their play on the basketball court can change the hearts and minds<\/em> of those affected by their race.<\/h4>\n

sportsmanship <\/strong><\/em>is an environment\u00a0of fair play created by\u00a0athletes and fans.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0traits<\/strong><\/em> are characteristics<\/em>. follow suit<\/strong><\/em> means do the same, imitate<\/em>. hearts and minds<\/strong><\/em> is a common expression that\u00a0in this context means opinions, perspectives, feelings.<\/em><\/p>\n

two of the sportsmanship traits<\/em> that perry high school promotes (as seen in the video) are also useful:<\/p>\n

**cheer<\/strong><\/em> for<\/span>, not against. \u00a0(cheer<\/em>\u00a0is what fans at a sporting event do. the cheers<\/em> are usually not\u00a0racist.)<\/p>\n

**everyone is a role model<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

to their credit, some of dallas center-grimes’ students recognized the impact of the trump chants. one of the students, sonya harwood<\/strong>, appears at the beginning of\u00a0this\u00a0video from kcci<\/strong>, another des moines television station.<\/p>\n

just to see how much we hurt<\/em> perry, just hurt<\/em> me inside.<\/h4>\n

and a little later in the vid she\u00a0adds<\/p>\n

i knew as soon as<\/em> we saw this we had to fix it.<\/h4>\n

hurt<\/strong><\/em> here means they did emotional damage<\/em>. it can also refer to physical pain<\/em>. this johnny cash<\/strong> song is another example<\/p>\n

as soon as <\/strong><\/em>means exactly at that moment<\/em>. trigger<\/a><\/em> <\/strong>means the racist chants motivate<\/em> ivory, pump him up<\/em>, push\u00a0him to play hard<\/em>. strive<\/strong><\/em> means give a strong effort, work hard<\/em>.<\/p>\n
