href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/nyt-gravitational-waves-detected\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an article by <strong><span class=\"simple-byline-author\" data-byline-name=\"Dennis Overbye\">dennis overbye<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0at <strong>nytimes.com\u00a0<\/strong><\/a>gives a more complete picture\u00a0of the indecision\u00a0that\u00a0einstein <em><strong>struggled<\/strong><\/em> (fought) with<\/p>\n<h4>in 1916, he told karl schwarzschild, the discoverer of black holes, that gravitational waves did not exist, then said they did. in 1936, he and his assistant nathan rosen <em>set out<\/em> to publish a paper <em>debunking<\/em> the idea before doing the same <em>flip-flop<\/em> again.<\/h4>\n<p><em><strong>set out<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>is a phrasal verb that means <em>started<\/em>, <em>established a\u00a0goal<\/em>. <em><strong>debunk<\/strong><\/em> means <em>show that it&#8217;s false<\/em>. <em><strong>flip-flop<\/strong><\/em> means <em>change weiss<\/strong>, a member\u00a0of the team that confirmed the existence of the gravitational waves. weiss said, that despite being a retired professor,<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"307\" data-total-count=\"2531\">his life now was more like that of a graduate student \u2014 that is to say, <em>tinkering<\/em> and making things work.<\/h4>\n<p interference.<\/h4>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"422\" data-total-count=\"15200\"><em><strong>plagued by<\/strong><\/em> indicates a <em>problem<\/em>. \u00a0weiss\u00a0told his colleagues<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"422\" data-total-count=\"15200\">that needs to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">be fixed<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><em><strong>be fixed<\/strong><\/em> is an excellent example of <strong>passive voice<\/strong>. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>be<\/em><\/span> is an auxiliary, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">fixed<\/span> a past participle. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">who<\/span> needs to fix the problem (the subject) <span
