nominations for the 88th academy awards<\/strong> were announced on thursday. as most of the\u00a0categories allow for only 5\u00a0nominees,\u00a0it’s inevitable that a lot of outstanding work will not be recognized. the media frequently\u00a0calls this a\u00a0snub<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0(rejection<\/a>) and it’s\u00a0a common theme every year on the internet after oscar nominations are released.\u00a0this year,\u00a0<\/strong> ran\u00a0this headline<\/p>\n

unfortunately, cary joji fukunaga’s gripping<\/em> drama received no love from the academy.<\/h4>\n

gripping<\/strong><\/em> means really interesting <\/em>or emotional<\/em>. it’s related to the physical idea of grip<\/strong><\/em>: grabbing or holding.<\/p>\n

overwhelming<\/a><\/strong><\/em> as it’s used here means a lot<\/em>. reprising<\/strong><\/em> means doing again<\/em>, bringing back<\/a><\/em>. shut out<\/strong><\/em> means jordan hasn’t been nominated for any<\/span> major awards.<\/p>\n

it is nice to be recognized, but n.w.a.\u00a0is anti-establishment so we’re used to people trying<\/em> to dismiss what we gotta say, used to the industry looking down on<\/em> us. we were the black sheeps<\/em> of the industry and we used to it<\/em>. If we didn’t get nominated, that would be familiar territory.<\/h4>\n

used to<\/strong><\/em><\/a> in all these instances is accustomed to<\/em>, i.e. the negative reaction to n.w.a. is nothing out of the ordinary\u00a0for its members, it’s normal to them. \u00a0look down on<\/strong><\/em> means the recording industry has always acted arrogantly; like n.w.a. was inferior. it’s similar to the idea of black sheep<\/strong><\/em>, that is used to label people who are considered disgraceful or embarrassing.<\/p>\n
