the oakland raiders’ <\/strong>brilliant\u00a0<\/strong>defensive back\u00a0charles woodson<\/strong> will play his last game today. earlier this week he shared some thoughts about\u00a0his career ending on espn.com<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

i approached my career with the mindset<\/em> of never looking back<\/em>.<\/h4>\n

look back<\/strong><\/em> in this context refers to\u00a0focusing on the past<\/em>. mindset<\/em><\/strong> is psychology<\/em>. regret<\/strong><\/em> is used to talk about feelings of sadness or disappointment about the past. despite what he says above, in the article woodson indeed\u00a0uses the word regret<\/em> to describe his feelings.<\/p>\n

woodson wishes he would have sat down<\/span> with raiders owner al davis when he left the team after the 2005 season. al davis in 2011. woodson returned to the raiders in 2013.<\/em><\/h6>\n

one thing woodson would have done<\/em> differently\u00a0relates to late<\/em><\/strong> (deceased,dead) raiders owner al davis<\/strong>.\u00a0he\u00a0uses past perfect<\/strong> and 3rd conditional<\/strong> to express it<\/p>\n

i wish i\u00a0would’ve had<\/em> a conversation with raiders owner al davis when I left as a free agent after the 2005 season.\u00a0i wish now we had talked<\/em>. not that it would have changed<\/em> anything, but it would have been<\/em> good to sit down, face-to-face, and just talk to him and see what could have happened<\/em>.<\/h4>\n

had talked<\/strong><\/em> is past perfect. \u00a0all the other examples follow the 3rd conditional structure of modal+have+past participle\u00a0<\/strong>which is\u00a0the most common\u00a0structure to use\u00a0to express regret.<\/p>\n

woodson also mentioned tackling giants<\/span><\/strong> running back brandon jacobs<\/strong> early in the 2007 nfc championship game. he said that the impact of the hit<\/p>\n

knocked … my … ass … out<\/a>!…..that’s a big regret<\/em> for me, not going and hitting that guy low. that was a ROUGH<\/em> day from<\/em> then on out<\/em>.<\/h4>\n

rough<\/strong><\/em> means difficult<\/em>. from then on out<\/strong><\/em> means starting at\u00a0that moment until the end<\/em>.<\/p>\n

finally, charles\u00a0recalls a 2010 playoff game vs the arizona cardinals<\/span><\/strong> when referees warned him multiple times before the game about holding wide receiver larry fitzgerald<\/strong>. it affected woodson’s mindset<\/em>, and as a photo caption says in the espn.com article, he was not happy with how things turned out<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0(happened) that day<\/p>\n

i just remember after that game just kicking myself<\/em>, because i allowed somebody to dictate a part of what i did on the field on game day. i never got over that<\/a>.<\/h4>\n

kicking myself<\/strong><\/em> is an expression that shows frustration and regret.<\/p>\n

congratulations to charles woodson for his excellence (he\u00a0was voted into his 9th pro bowl this season\u00a0) and longevity (18-year career, he’s retiring at age 39). \u00a0a truly great football player is playing his last game today.<\/p>\n
