the hawkeyes enter the game\u00a012-1, their only loss coming in the big ten title game\u00a0vs the michigan state spartans<\/strong><\/span>, a 16-13 battle\u00a0that was decided in the final :30.<\/p>\n

despite the disappointing loss, the hawkeyes were rewarded for their spectacular season with a\u00a0trip (NOT a travel<\/em>) to pasadena, california<\/strong><\/span> (home of the rose bowl).<\/p>\n

yesterday morning, the head coaches of the two 2016 rose bowl teams stanford’s david shaw<\/strong> and iowa’s kirk ferentz\u00a0<\/strong>talked to the media for the final time before the game.<\/p>\n

coach shaw made several comparisons<\/strong> <\/em>(NOT comparations<\/em>, comparation<\/em> is spanglish from the spanish word\u00a0comparaci\u00f3n<\/em>) between the two teams.<\/p>\n

throughout<\/em> the year, i think both of our teams gained<\/em> a lot of momentum without a lot of fanfare<\/em>.<\/h4>\n

throughout<\/strong><\/em> means as the season progressed<\/em>, or from start to finish<\/em>. gain<\/strong><\/em> means get<\/em> or acquire<\/em>. fanfare<\/strong> <\/em>means\u00a0media\u00a0<\/em>attention<\/em>.<\/p>\n

what shaw\u00a0says is\u00a0slightly<\/a> true, but stanford was a top 25 team when the season started. the hawkeyes on the other hand, after a disappointing 7-6 season in 2014 including losses in their final 3 games, had a miserable\u00a0offseason with many\u00a0fans calling for coach ferentz to be fired. the 2015 season started for the hawkeyes with\u00a0almost no\u00a0fanfare<\/em>.<\/p>\n

shaw believes both teams are unselfish and well coached, and share a positive team philosophy<\/p>\n

[when] your coaches and players are on the same page<\/em>, u don’t care what the outside world says. u come to the next game and win and i think that’s one thing both these teams have in common.<\/h4>\n

on the same page<\/strong><\/em> means they agree, have the same idea.<\/p>\n

coach ferentz is confident his team can deal\u00a0with the intensity and pressure of playing in the rose bowl<\/p>\n

as the season went on, the stakes<\/em> went up a little bit. certainly our last couple games had a lot on the line<\/em>, and then\u00a0to play in indianapolis, it was a great environment. it wasn’t the rose bowl and i get that<\/em>. but i think our guys’ll be ready to go. they‘re<\/em> used to competing<\/em>. they‘re<\/em> used to being<\/em> in really live, active environments.<\/h4>\n

stakes<\/strong><\/em> refers to the magnitude or importance of the games. on the line<\/strong><\/em> is also talking about the significance of what the hawkeyes were playing for<\/em>. the hawks were trying to complete the first undefeated<\/strong><\/em> (no losses) season in school history. this made the games at the end of the season more intense. i get that<\/strong><\/em> <\/a>means i understand<\/em>.<\/p>\n

kirk uses used to competing<\/strong><\/em> and used to being<\/strong><\/em><\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>to show that his players have no problem with high pressure environments like the rose bowl. \u00a0it’s normal, regular for them. attention esl readers:<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0the -ing form of competing<\/em> and being<\/em> indicate that this structure is talking about being accustomed to<\/em> and NOT an activity that was common in the past but doesn’t happen anymore<\/a> (used to+simple form of verb<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

ferentz concludes that his team’s challenge is the stanford cardinal, not the emotion of playing in the rose bowl. like\u00a0shaw, his tone is complimentary towards his opponent<\/p>\n

at the end of the day<\/em>, as good as this is; it’s such a historic bowl, i can’t imagine there’s a better enviornment in america to play college football. [but] it’s still a game once<\/em> the game gets going. it’s a game on the field and our challenge is to play a really good football team.<\/h4>\n

at the end of the day<\/strong><\/em> is a common expression that means what’s important.<\/em>\u00a0once<\/strong><\/em> in this context means when<\/em>, NOT\u00a0one time<\/em>.<\/p>\n

it should be mentioned here that coaches have a style of speaking that is sometimes called coachspeak<\/strong><\/em>. \u00a0they tend to look for vocabulary that is not controversial. for this reason, u will hear coaches perhaps overuse common expressions like on the same page<\/em> or at the end of the day<\/em>. \u00a0this can be useful in diplomatic situations. however, in other scenarios where listeners are looking for something more creative or frank<\/strong> <\/em>(direct), it can be frustrating.<\/p>\n

speaking of frank<\/em>, this hawkeye fan yesterday offered his earnest<\/strong> <\/em>(sincere) if not necessarily objective\u00a0analysis of the moment<\/p>\n

fricking<\/strong><\/em> is a softer way to say fucking<\/em>. \u00a0it’s a very iowan sounding expression. pumped<\/strong><\/em> is excited<\/em>. take over<\/strong><\/em> means assume control<\/em>.<\/p>\n
