last week academy award winning actress jennifer lawrence<\/strong> was in headlines as a result of\u00a0for lena dunham<\/strong>\u00b4s newsletter, lenny<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

when lena first brought up<\/em> the idea of lenny to me, i was excited…..to start thinking about what to complain<\/a> about<\/h4>\n

ever-so-slightly<\/em> quiet when it comes to feminism<\/h4>\n

because she doesn’t like<\/p>\n

joining conversations that feel like they\u2019re \u201ctrending<\/em>.\u201d i\u2019m even the asshole who didn\u2019t do anything about the ice-bucket challenge \u2014 which was saving lives \u2014 because it started to feel more like a \u201ctrend<\/em>\u201d than a cause.<\/h4>\n

the most reported part of her\u00a0essay did sound\u00a0slightly<\/em>\u00a0feminist, and it caused jennifer lawrence<\/em> to trend<\/em>\u00a0for several hours on multiple\u00a0days. slightly<\/a><\/strong><\/em> means a little, and ever so<\/strong><\/em> emphasizes the idea;\u00a0i.e.<\/a> very, very little.\u00a0<\/span>trending<\/a><\/strong><\/em> and <\/span>trend<\/em> <\/strong>are both used to indicate a hot topic of the moment.<\/span><\/p>\n

the buzz<\/a> surrounding lawrence’s opinion focused on\u00a0her frustration over being paid less than her male co-stars in the movie american hustle<\/strong><\/em>, the golden globe winner for best comedy or musical\u00a0in 2013. she wrote<\/p>\n

when the sony hack happened and I found out<\/em> how much less I was being paid than the lucky people with dicks<\/em>, i didn\u2019t get mad at sony. i got mad at myself. i failed as a negotiator because I gave up<\/em> early. i didn\u2019t want to keep fighting over millions of dollars that, frankly<\/em>, due to<\/em> two franchises, I don\u2019t need.<\/h4>\n

find out<\/strong><\/em> is used when information is discovered. dick<\/a><\/strong><\/em> is another name for penis<\/em>. give up<\/a><\/strong><\/em>\u00a0is quit<\/em> or stop trying<\/em>. frankly<\/strong> <\/em>and honestly<\/em> are synonyms, and due to<\/strong><\/em> is the same as\u00a0because of<\/em>.<\/p>\n

which means it used to be<\/a> important to her to always be liked, but not anymore. however she also admits she has her fingers crossed<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0(hoping) that her opinion won’t\u00a0piss<\/a> anyone off<\/strong><\/em> (make them angry).<\/p>\n

she shares this story as evidence of how women and men\u00a0are perceived differently<\/p>\n

a few weeks ago at work, i spoke my mind<\/em> and gave my opinion in a clear and no-bullshit<\/a> way; no aggression, just blunt<\/em>. the man i was working with (actually, he was working for me) said, \u201cwhoa! we\u2019re all on the same team here!\u201d as if i was yelling at<\/em> him. \u00a0u would have thought i had said something offensive<\/em>.<\/h4>\n

speak your mind<\/strong><\/em> means to say what u are thinking<\/em>. blunt<\/strong><\/em> means direct<\/em>. yell at<\/strong><\/em> can mean literally to shout<\/em> or scream<\/em>, but in this scenario it indicates a reprimand<\/em>. the use of third conditional<\/strong> (would have thought<\/em>) and past perfect<\/strong> (i had said<\/em>) indicate that these ideas are hypothetical. \u00a0in reality,\u00a0she didn’t say anything offensive.<\/p>\n

lawrence concludes<\/p>\n

this might have NOTHING to do with my vagina, but i wasn\u2019t completely wrong when another leaked<\/em> sony email revealed a producer referring to a fellow<\/em> lead actress in a negotiation as a \u201cspoiled brat<\/em>.\u201d<\/h4>\n

leak<\/strong><\/em><\/a>\u00a0means\u00a0unofficially released to the media<\/em>. fellow<\/strong><\/em> shows that lawrence is talking about another lead actress (it’s angelina jolie<\/strong>). \u00a0spoiled<\/a><\/strong><\/em>\u00a0and brat<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0are both used to describe\u00a0kids who have terrible attitudes; who aren’t used to hearing<\/a> the word “no” from their parents. in this scenario it is labeling jolie as immature <\/em>or childish.<\/em><\/p>\n

and j law’s mention of her vagina furthers her point that women are not treated the same as\u00a0men when negotiating in hollywood.<\/p>\n
