shit happens<\/strong><\/em> is a popular, philosophical shit expression<\/a>. \u00a0it’s used when something undesired happens\u00a0and\u00a0indicates that some negativity in life is inevitable<\/em>. shit<\/strong><\/em> in this context should be understood as stuff<\/em> or things<\/em>.<\/p>\n

vice’s headline was in response to comments from egypt’s foreign minister sameh shoukry <\/strong>who wrote in an open letter that<\/p>\n

it would defy<\/em> reason to think that egypt’s law enforcement authorities could ever deliberately harm<\/em> innocent tourists. in fact, egypt’s prosperity and the very livelihood<\/em> of its citizens depend enormously on the tourism sector<\/h4>\n

defy<\/strong><\/em> means go against<\/em>, resist<\/em>. livelihood<\/em><\/strong> is how people make a living<\/em>, a job<\/em>.<\/p>\n

harm<\/strong><\/em> means danger<\/em> or injure<\/em>. in harm’s way<\/strong><\/em> is a common expression used to refer to being in a dangerous place.<\/p>\n

shoukry also compared egypt’s war on terror to mexico’s issues with violence resulting from a war on drugs<\/p>\n

the drug war in mexico has killed tens of thousands of innocent people, a large portion of them law enforcement officials. if anything, this shows that egypt and mexico face similar challenges. we are all together in the same boat<\/em>, sailing in a stormy ocean.<\/h4>\n

not everyone in egypt feels like it’s one big, collective boat, though. brigadier general mohamed samir<\/strong>, a spokesman for the egyptian military stated<\/p>\n

when it comes to tourists, it is a ministry of interior issue, not ours. this incident has nothing to do with the army even if the army and police carried out<\/em> the operation together.<\/h4>\n
