i had never heard of franklin pierce university<\/strong> before a couple days ago. \u00a0they are in the news for releasing the results of the first\u00a0poll (survey of voters) of any type that doesn’t have hillary clinton<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0as the leader to be the democratic candidate for president in 2016.<\/p>\n

republican<\/span><\/strong> and democrat<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0(the two principal political parties in the u.s.) candidates must participate in a long process of mini-elections that take place on a state by state basis. the small state of new hampshire is important because they are the second state to hold their\u00a0preliminary election, known officially as a primary election<\/strong><\/em>, or just a primary<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n

franklin pierce university is located in rindge, new hampshire.<\/p>\n

but who the hell was franklin pierce?<\/p>\n

franklin pierce\u00a0was a\u00a0brigadier general in the u.s. army during the mexican-american war.\u00a0<\/em><\/h6>\n

franklin pierce<\/strong> was the fourteenth president of the united states.\u00a0he is mostly forgotten as a statesman,\u00a0and\u00a0his participation in the mostly forgotten mexican war has also been mostly forgotten.<\/p>\n

but while few today have any opinion\u00a0about or interest in\u00a0pierce’s brief service in the u.s. army, it was a\u00a0focus of much national attention during his run for the presidency in 1852.<\/p>\n

pierce’s\u00a0opponent in the election was winfield scott<\/strong>, his commander during the mexican war.\u00a0scott’s several victories in mexico, including the battles of veracruz, churubusco and chapultepec (the inspiration for mexico’s iconic\u00a0ni\u00f1os heroes<\/strong>), not to mention his years of previous military experience had made him a national hero.<\/p>\n

scott’s campaign criticized pierce for fainting<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(losing consciousness) during the battle of churubusco. jonathan zimmerman<\/strong>‘s column in the dallas morning news<\/strong>\u00a0explained it like this<\/p>\n

mocking<\/a> franklin pierce as the \u201cfainting<\/em> general,\u201d winfield scott\u2019s campaign spread<\/em> the rumor that pierce had passed out<\/em> [during the battle of churubusco].\u00a0but pierce\u2019s supporters mocked<\/a> scott…. a pompous has-been<\/a> who was well past his prime<\/a>.<\/h4>\n

spread<\/strong><\/em> means distribute<\/em>. \u00a0passed out<\/strong><\/em> is similar to faint <\/em>and is frequently used to describe someone falling asleep or losing consciousness from drinking too much<\/em>.<\/p>\n

despite scott’s superior military record, franklin pierce won the election easily and served one term (four years) as president. about a hundred\u00a0years later, forgotten by nearly everyone other than historians and new hampshire residents, his name became the name of a university.<\/p>\n
