earlier this week, chicago tribune<\/strong> columnist eric zorn<\/strong> of popular opinion on billionaire and presidential candidate donald trump<\/strong><\/p>\n

u may think real estate mogul and former reality tv\u00a0star donald trump is a buffoon, a racist clown, a charlatan or just a \u2014 a cartoon ugly american come to life whose campaign for president is an exercise in vanity<\/em> aimed<\/em> at<\/em> his long-term business interests.<\/h4>\n

vanity<\/strong><\/em> is similar to narcissism<\/em> or self-delusion<\/em>. \u00a0it is a word that is frequently used in reference to\u00a0donald trump. aimed at<\/strong><\/em> indicates an objective.<\/p>\n

zorn’s conclusion on trump’s chances of being the republican candidate for president in 2016…<\/p>\n

i doubt he’ll end up<\/em> as the nominee. many gop<\/em>\u00a0voters who are initially jazzed<\/em> by<\/em> his controversial, cocksure<\/em> pronouncements will likely come to see them as a liability<\/em> in the general election.<\/h4>\n

but he also believes trump<\/p>\n

will be in the top tier<\/em> of republican presidential hopefuls in at least the early [phases of the process].<\/h4>\n

is used to mark the completion\u00a0of a series of events. gop<\/strong><\/em> is a nickname for the republican party. \u00a0it stands for g<\/u>rand o<\/span>ld p<\/span>arty<\/em>. jazzed<\/strong> <\/em>means excited<\/em>.\u00a0cocksure<\/strong><\/em> is a synonym for confident<\/em>. \u00a0liability<\/strong><\/em> is a disadvantage. tier<\/strong><\/em> is a group.<\/p>\n

though a\u00a0majority of\u00a0mexicans are probably not totally sure who donald trump is, most of the publicity his\u00a0campaign has received has been over\u00a0comments he made about mexico when he announced his candidacy.<\/p>\n

at his campaign kickoff<\/em> last month, trump warned of a lack<\/em> of security along the u.s.-mexico border, complaining<\/a> that the u.s.\u00a0has become a “dumping<\/em> ground<\/a>” for the world’s problems.<\/h4>\n

kickoff<\/strong><\/em> is the opening play of a football game. in this context, it’s the same as launch;\u00a0<\/em>the official beginning of trump’s\u00a0campaign.\u00a0lack<\/em><\/strong> means without. dump<\/strong><\/em> means unload<\/em> or get rid of<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n

these were trump’s controversial, reported comments<\/p>\n

when mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. they’re sending people that have lots of problems…they’re bringing drugs, they’re bringing crime. they’re rapists. and some, I assume, are good people.<\/h4>\n

trump also claimed<\/a> he would build a great wall between mexico and the u.s.and make mexico pay for it.<\/p>\n

polls<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0(surveys) that currently have trump as the second most popular republican candidate appear to validate trump’s<\/p>\n

straight talk<\/strong><\/em> is honest.<\/em> cowardly<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0means\u00a0afraid<\/em>.<\/p>\n

television networks nbc universal<\/strong>, televisa<\/strong>, univision<\/strong> and carlos slim<\/strong>‘s ora<\/strong> as well as\u00a0macy’s<\/strong>\u00a0department stores have all terminated their business with trump. nevertheless, tara john<\/strong> reports on time.com<\/strong><\/a> that he remains<\/p>\n

unwilling<\/em> to back down<\/em> from his remarks<\/h4>\n

willing<\/a><\/strong> <\/em>means inclined to<\/em>.\u00a0back down<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0is an\u00a0admission of error<\/em> or submission.<\/em>\u00a0it is stronger than walk back<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n

his\u00a0reaction to macy’s was something like<\/p>\n

suing<\/em> univision for more than $500 million<\/h4>\n

and has<\/p>\n

also threatened<\/em> legal action against\u00a0nbc<\/h4>\n

sue<\/strong><\/em> is taking legal action<\/em>. threaten<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0gives the idea of intimidation.<\/p>\n

in addition to lost business, several celebrities have cancelled events that are connected to trump. \u00a0song and dance man ricky martin<\/strong> cancelled an event at a donald trump owned golf course, and nina terrero<\/strong>‘s piece\u00a0on time.com<\/strong><\/a> chronicles all of the celebrities who have declined to appear at the miss usa pageant<\/strong> (also partially owned by mr. trump); most notably hip hop star flo rida<\/strong> and nfl hall of famer emmit smith<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

in fact terrero’s article\u00a0is a lesson in how to say no after u have already said yes. she uses four different phrasal verbs–\u00a0back out<\/strong><\/em>, pull out<\/strong><\/em>, bow out<\/strong><\/em> and drop out<\/em><\/strong> in addition to withdraw<\/em><\/strong> to describe this action.<\/p>\n
