at the end of last month a few students asked me about former<\/a> president donald trump<\/strong> not attending new president joe biden<\/strong>‘s inauguration. it was big news for sure, but it’s happened before. an article in the new york times<\/strong> by jacey fortin<\/span><\/strong><\/a> reports multiple historic examples and has this headline<\/span><\/p>\n

Trump Is Not the First President to Snub<\/em> an Inauguration<\/h1>\n

john adams and thomas jefferson died on the same day: july 4, 1826–the 50th anniversary of u.s. independence<\/em><\/h5>\n

fortin describes that the first inauguration <\/span>snub\u00a0<\/em>was between founding fathers<\/span> john adams<\/strong> and <\/span>thomas jefferson<\/strong>… \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

when the presidency of john adams ended in 1801, it could have gone badly<\/em>. the united states was in its infancy<\/em> and had never seen<\/em> a head of state transfer power to a political opponent–in this case, thomas jefferson, whose republican<\/em> vision for the country was at odds<\/em> with the strong central government favored by adams. the election of 1800 was hard fought<\/em>, marred<\/em> by personal attacks and deadlocked<\/em> for weeks, in part because the country had not yet worked out the kinks<\/em> of electing its \u00a0president and vice president at the same time.<\/h4>\n

this problem overshadowed<\/em>\u00a0adams\u2019s rude refusal<\/em> to show up<\/em> for the inauguration.<\/h4>\n

could have gone badly<\/em><\/strong> is a past modal<\/strong>.\u00a0 the article suggests that civil war was a possibility. but in fact the transfer of power from adams to jefferson was peaceful. infancy<\/em><\/strong> refers to the earliest days<\/em> of the united states. had never seen<\/strong><\/em> is past perfect<\/strong><\/a>. it refers to 1800 and the time before. republican<\/em><\/strong> means jefferson did not promote a strong central government and preferred that the individual states maintained power.<\/p>\n

at odds<\/em><\/strong><\/a> means jefferson and adams disagreed<\/em>. \u00a0hard fought<\/em><\/strong> means it was a difficult<\/em>, intense<\/em> election. \u00a0mar<\/em><\/strong> means spoil<\/em><\/a>, harm<\/em>.<\/a> deadlocked<\/em><\/strong> means the winner couldn’t be declared for weeks after the election. \u00a0work out the kinks<\/em> <\/strong>means fix all the little problems<\/em>.\u00a0the kinks<\/strong> is the name of a famous british rock band too.<\/p>\n
