font-family: Lato, sans-serif; font-size: 17px;\">was between founding fathers<\/span><strong style=\"color: #3d3d3d; font-family: Lato, sans-serif; font-size: 17px;\"> john adams<\/strong><span style=\"color: #3d3d3d; font-family: Lato, sans-serif; font-size: 17px;\"> and <\/span><strong style=\"color: #3d3d3d; font-family: Lato, sans-serif; font-size: 17px;\">thomas jefferson<\/strong><span style=\"color: #3d3d3d; font-family: Lato, sans-serif; font-size: 17px;\">&#8230; \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">when the presidency of john adams ended in 1801, it <em>could have gone badly<\/em>. the united states was in its <em>infancy<\/em> and <em>had never seen<\/em> a head of state transfer power to a political opponent&#8211;in this case, thomas jefferson, whose <em>republican<\/em> vision for the country was <em>at odds<\/em> with the strong central government favored by adams. the election of 1800 was <em>hard fought<\/em>, <em>marred<\/em> by personal attacks and <em>deadlocked<\/em> for weeks, in part because the country <em>had not yet worked out the kinks<\/em> of electing its \u00a0president and vice president at the same time.<\/h4>\n<p><strong>carol berkin<\/strong>, a professor of history at <strong>baruch college<\/strong> in new york city says&#8230;<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">this problem <em>overshadowed<\/em>\u00a0adams\u2019s <em>rude refusal<\/em> to <em>show up<\/em> for the inauguration.<\/h4>\n<p><strong><em>could have gone badly<\/em><\/strong> is a <strong>past modal<\/strong>.\u00a0 the article suggests that civil war was a possibility. but in fact the transfer of power from adams to jefferson was peaceful. <strong><em>infancy<\/em><\/strong> refers to <em>the earliest days<\/em> of the united states. <em><strong>had never seen<\/strong><\/em> is <a href=\"https:\/\/richyrocks.com\/coolenglish\/tag\/past-perfect\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>past perfect<\/strong><\/a>. it refers to 1800 and the time before. <strong><em>republican<\/em><\/strong> means jefferson did not promote a strong central government and preferred that the individual states maintained power.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/richyrocks.com\/coolenglish\/tag\/at-odds-definition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><em>at odds<\/em><\/strong><\/a> means jefferson and adams <em>disagreed<\/em>. \u00a0<strong><em>hard fought<\/em><\/strong> means it was a <em>difficult<\/em>, <em>intense<\/em> election. \u00a0<strong><em>mar<\/em><\/strong> means <a href=\"https:\/\/richyrocks.com\/coolenglish\/tag\/spoil-definition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>spoil<\/em><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/richyrocks.com\/coolenglish\/tag\/harm-definition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>harm<\/em>.<\/a> <strong><em>deadlocked<\/em><\/strong> means the winner couldn&#8217;t be declared for weeks after the election. \u00a0<strong><em>work out the kinks<\/em> <\/strong>means <em>fix all the little problems<\/em>.\u00a0<strong>the kinks<\/strong> is the name of a famous british rock band too.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Kinks - Lola (Official Music Video)\" width=\"758\" height=\"426\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6CzrYXcXweI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer;
