season i was confused when i heard <strong><em>it must have been love<\/em><\/strong> by <strong>roxette<\/strong> on a channel that was playing all christmas music. did somebody make a mistake? a song about falling in love with a prostitute on a christmas channel? by changing just one word&#8211;&gt;<em>it&#8217;s a cold winter day<\/em> to <em>it&#8217;s a cold <u>christmas<\/u> day,<\/em> a music publisher found a way to make even more money from a song that is already forever connected to the movie <strong><em>pretty woman<\/em><\/strong>. what a <strong><em>trashy\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>(questionable ethically), commercial trick!<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"kp-header\" data-ved=\"2ahUKEwiQ1rfB7cnmAhVBUKwKHWD_De0Q3z4oAHoECBAQAQ\">\n<div class=\"kp-hc\">\n<div class=\"NFQFxe Hhmu2e viOShc LKPcQc mod\" data-md=\"16\" data-hveid=\"CBAQAg\" rip<\/i><\/h5>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"SALvLe farUxc mJ2Mod\">\n<div class=\"i4J0ge\">\n<div class=\"NFQFxe siXlze yp1CPe mod\" data-attrid=\"kc:\/music\/recording_cluster:lyrics\" data-mhc=\"1\">\n<p>but after a few quick searches, i realized that it was actually a trashy, commercial trick that happened in the 1980s. the christmas version was first! according to <strong>wikipedia<\/strong>, <strong>emi germany<\/strong> asked roxette to &#8220;<em>come up<\/em> <em>with<\/em> an intelligent christmas single.&#8221;&#8216;\u00a0<strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/come-up-with-def\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">come up with<\/a><\/em><\/strong> means <em>create, produce<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>it must have been love (christmas for the broken hearted)<\/em><\/strong> was released in <a href=\"https:\/\/richyrocks.com\/coolenglish\/smorgasbord\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">roxette<\/a>&#8216;s native <a href=\"https:\/\/richyrocks.com\/coolenglish\/swederland-aint-there\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sweden<\/a> as a christmas song in december 1987 and was a big hit nationally.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Roxette - It Must Have Been Love (Christmas For The Broken Hearted) 1987\" width=\"758\" height=\"569\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZxjaqBpiy-8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>the word <em>christmas<\/em> was removed to make the song a better\u00a0<strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/fit-definition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fit<\/a><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(match) on the soundtrack for <em>pretty woman<\/em>, the story of a prostitute who falls in love with a <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/wealthy-definition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><em>wealthy<\/em><\/strong> <\/a>(rich) client. taking a closer look at the lyrics, \u00a0<em>it must have been love<\/em>\u00a0doesn&#8217;t exactly <strong><em>come across<\/em> <em>as<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(give the impression of) an obvious christmas cut, but there are actually a couple of references to winter and a cold climate.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-10310\" src=\"https:\/\/richyrocks.com\/coolenglish\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/3FDFE6BD00000578-4467434-image-a-40_1493758487771-295x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"295\" height=\"300\" dress to <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/wear-definition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wear<\/a> on a cold winter\/christmas day. <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/unless-def\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">unless<\/a> you&#8217;re a prostitute<\/em><\/h5>\n<p><em>pretty woman<\/em>\u00a0by contrast, was <strong><em>set<\/em><\/strong> (where it happened) in los angeles, a warm city\u00a0where there isn&#8217;t even a real winter. but this video has nearly half a billion views on <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>youtube<\/strong><\/span>, so obviously fans continue to feel its sentiment 30 years later <strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/in-spite-of-definition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in spite of<\/a>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>(regardless) the inconsistencies related to weather.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Roxette - It Must Have Been Love (Official Music Video)\" width=\"758\" web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>coincidentally, christmas is the best time of the year to understand the usage of the <strong>modal auxiliary verb<\/strong> <strong><em>must<\/em><\/strong> in the past<strong>.<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/xmas-examples-must-in-the-past\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this link<\/a>. has three christmas songs that\u00a0 have excellent examples in the lyrics. and now we can add<strong><em> it must have been love (christmas for the broken hearted)<\/em><\/strong> to the list.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/must-definition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">must<\/a><\/em><\/strong> in the past is used to show <em>a strong probability<\/em> or <em>the best explanation<\/em>. <em>must<\/em> in the present can also indicate an obligation, but must in the past is NOT an obligation. <em>it must have been love<\/em> is about a <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/break-up-definition-richyrocks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">break-up<\/a>. there is some doubt about the feelings at the end of the relationship, but the conclusion is that it was love. and that it was probably good. in fact, another lyric from the chorus of the song says <em>it must have been good<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img \/><\/p>\n<h5><em>it <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">must have been<\/span>\u00a0love. yeah right. or it\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">might have been<\/span>\u00a0all the cool presents he bought me<\/em>\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" style=\"margin-left: 3px; margin-right: 3px; vertical-align: middle; -webkit-box-shadow: none; -moz-box-shadow: none; box-shadow: none;\" src=\"https:\/\/richyrocks.com\/coolenglish\/wp-content\/plugins\/wp-emoji-one\/icons\/1F61D.png\" width=\"16\" height=\"16\" \/><\/h5>\n<p>some other interesting vocabulary in the lyrics&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>**the second line of the song (:35 in the official video) says,\u00a0<em>leave the winter on the<\/em> <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/richyrocks.com\/coolenglish\/grinding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ground<\/a><\/em><\/strong> (the surface of the earth). is the idea that the cold winter should stay on the <em>ground<\/em> and not be part of the relationship described in the song? maybe. or it might be that winter is the preferred season of this swedish pop duo and they want snow to stay on the ground longer. \u00a0it&#8217;s not clear&#x1f937;&#x1f3fd;&#x200d;&#x2640;&#xfe0f;<\/p>\n<div style=\"padding-top: 56.250%; position: relative;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0;\" src=\"https:\/\/gifer.com\/embed\/4UoI\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gifer.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">via GIFER<\/a><\/p>\n<h5><i>another possibility: hey! leave the snow on the ground, elf &#x1f620;<\/i><\/h5>\n<p>**<strong><em>wake up<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0appears in the next line, at :41. \u00a0it&#8217;s probably the first <strong>phrasal verb<\/strong> u ever learned. it means <em>stop sleeping, get up.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>**<strong><em>dream away<\/em><\/strong> is a much less common phrasal verb that means she is constantly <em><strong>daydreaming<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0 (thinking, fantasizing) about her ex. listen for it at the end of the first and second verses (1:00, 2:00)<\/p>\n<p>**the second verse starts with the line <em>make believing we&#8217;re together <\/em>(1:34). <strong><em>make believe<\/em><\/strong> means <a href=\"https:\/\/richyrocks.com\/coolenglish\/tag\/pretend-definition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>pretend<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">making believe<\/span><em> that they are astronauts (khaleej-times.com)<\/em><\/h5>\n<p>**the chorus uses<strong> past perfect<\/strong> to describe the duration of the love: <em>from the moment we touched till the time <strong>had run out<\/strong><\/em>; <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/run-out-of-definition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>run out<\/em> <\/a><\/strong>means <em>diminish to zero, expire.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>**and the last line of the song is <em>it&#8217;s where the wind blows.<\/em> <strong><em>blow<\/em><\/strong> is the most common way to describe the action of the wind in english. the last line of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/richyrocks.com\/coolenglish\/bohemian-rhapsody-3rd-conditional\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">queen<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s most famous song <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/richyrocks.com\/coolenglish\/trump-pardons-the-toughest-sheriff-in-america\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bohemian rhapsody<\/a><\/em><\/strong> contains another
