there have been several articles published this week claiming that the seattle seahawks are the favorite team of the 9/11 truthers (people who don’t believe the official explanation of the attacks against the united states on september 11, 2001 and demand further investigation of the event).
the pentagon on 9/11: truthers believe the official explanation of what happened is false.
this is mostly thanks to seahawks head coach pete carroll. the usa today relates this widely circulated anecdote
two years ago, carroll met with former army chief of staff and four-star general peter chiarelli and……brought up many popular conspiracy theories concerned with the attacks of sept. 11, 2001
former means previous or ex. brought up is a phrasal verb that indicates carroll initiated the conversation.
at super bowl xlix media day this week, usa today asked carroll about his connection to the truthers. though he looked less than enthusiastic to talk about it, he didn’t reject the truthers either.

additionally, earlier this season when the seahawks released talented but problematic wide receiver percy harvin, seattletimes.com posted these comments that carroll made a couple years ago comparing his philosophy for dealing with difficult players to u.s. policy in iraq
we [could have] just talked to people and listened to what their issues were. and then tried to figure out the best way we could support them and change things, as opposed to bombing thousands of people with shock and awe. it might’ve taken us longer to influence change, but nobody would’ve died. And the power that we could’ve generated by just being willing to listen and see if there was a way we could answer their call and help them
figure out means analyze and find a solution.
it might’ve taken longer, nobody would’ve died and the power we could’ve generated are all examples of how to express hypothetical situations in the past i.e. none of these things actually happened but caroll is suggesting that there were other alternatives.
all of coach’s truther energy blends interestingly with what happened during the post game of last year’s super bowl in new york city. after the seahawks embarrassed the denver broncos 43-8, mvp malcolm smith‘s press conference was interrupted by matt mills, a truther from the city who urged
investigate 9/11. 9/11 was perpetrated by people within our own government.
