sean doolittle wins world series, blows off white house visit

the washington nationals had a run through the major leaugue baseball playoffs and an emotional world series victory that captured the attention of fans everywhere. president donald trump invited the nationals to the white house earlier this week, but several players, including closer (specialist pitcher who pitches the ninth inning) sean doolittle blew off (ignored) the invitation.

doolittle, who had 29 regular season saves, another in the nlcs and one more in the world series explained

there’s a lot of things, policies that i disagree with, but at the end of the day, it has more to do with the divisive rhetoric and the enabling of conspiracy theories and widening the divide in this country.

policy is a plan, a strategy, a system. it is expressed in spanish with the word política, but BE CAREFUL. política can be translated into english as politician, politics or political too; similar words but with different meanings and applications. at the end of the day is a fashionable but overused expression that means all things considered. because of the spanish phrase estar de acuerdo it’s common for spanish speakers to say i am agree or she is disagree. DON’T DO IT. it’s spanglish. just agree and disagree. no verb “to be” in english. rhetoric refers to the words trump says and tweets. enabling means making it possible. supporting. widen means growing bigger. doolittle’s idea is that the way president trump talks divides the country.

the quote above is from a usa today article by chris bumbaca that reports

doolittle and his wife, eireann dolan, have done extensive work with immigrants, and he’s been upset by trump’s comments about their origin countries. [doolittle said], “my wife and I stand for inclusion and acceptance, and we’ve done work with refugees, people that come from, you know, the ‘shithole‘ countries.'”

upset means altered emotionally; sad or angry. stand for means represent, support. shithole means a bad place. doolittle is referring to comments president trump made about immigrants coming to the u.s. from several countries at the beginning of 2018.

trump’s comments about “shithole countries” was the topic of a video here on richyrocks.com about the influence the president has over global english vocabulary and the difference between shithole, butthole and asshole.

i think that’s an important part of allyship, and i don’t want to turn my back on them, i have a brother-in-law who has autism, and (trump) is a guy that mocked a disabled reporter. how would i explain that to him that i hung out with somebody who mocked the way that he talked, or the way that he moves his hands? i can’t get past that stuff.

allyship means supporting a marginalized group that u are not a member of. -ship is a suffix found at the end of many nouns such as friendship, leadership and censorship. turn your back on means ignore, abandon. mock means make fun of, laugh at. get past means forget about, not let it bother u. stuff is things; it is referring to trump’s rhetoric. hang out means associate with socially. hangin out are the first two words of the that 70s show theme song.

sean doolittle is definitely not the first athlete to contemplate passing on an invitation to the trump white house.

whether to take these white house visits have become conscious decisions for championship teams to make during the trump presidency. of course, that’s pending an invite at all — trump pulled the philadelphia eagles‘ invite in 2018 because many players said they were not going.

whether indicates a choice. pending means the rejection is dependent on the invitation. at all means in any way and emphasizes that if there is no invitation, there can’t be a rejection. pull in this context means cancel, withdraw.

meme of guy pointing to his head. text says:if u don't invite them, they can't turn u down

turn down?

did u watch the world series? what did u think? would u visit the white house if trump invited u? share your answers under leave a reply
