chris herring of the wall street journal (wsj.com) is reporting that oklahoma city thunder forward kevin durant lies (doesn’t tell the truth).
kevin durant is 6-foot-9. that’s his height by all official accounts—the nba, the oklahoma city thunder, his wikipedia page—and that’s how durant will be described throughout the basketball playoffs. as it turns out, though…..
will be described is passive voice. it implies that many people and publications will report durant’s height as 6-9 (pronounced six-foot-nine or six-nine). throughout means the entire playoffs, start to finish. turn out means result or happen, and though indicates that a contrasting idea is coming next.

the contrasting idea and/or lie is that kd is not really 6-9 (2.06m). earlier this season after a thunder victory over the los angeles clippers in which he scored the winning basket and then preserved the win with a walk-off block on clipper point guard chris paul, durant confessed
“he’s 6 feet tall and I’m 6-11.” It was a rare example of durant slipping up by mentioning his actual height. since joining the league, durant has gone with an extremely conservative height, one that thunder teammate steven adams calls “bullshit.”
rare means atypical. it does NOT mean weird, which is a common spanglish confusion based on the word raro in spanish. slip up means make a mistake. actual means real, NOT now or current. that is also spanglish based on the spanish word actual. bullshit indicates that adams doesn’t believe durant is only 6-9.

nba game programs across the country are littered with inaccuracies when it comes to player height. The widespread misrepresentations highlight a funny thing about the nba: its players, despite being taller than most of the other 2.7 billion men on earth, lie about their height like everyone else.
durant’s case is particularly odd, though, since he stretched the truth to make himself shorter.
litter is leaving garbage in public places; in this scenario it means there are many examples. widespread means everywhere. highlight means show. despite is like saying it doesn’t matter that nba players are tall, they aren’t honest about their height.
a sign reminding us not to litter (accidental.com.au)
odd is weird. or strange. stretch refers to elasticity; the ability to get wider or longer. stretch the truth means not be completely honest, lie a little.
kids had hours of fun just stretching and stretching this toy
so why does kevin durant do this? according to the article
there’s actually a basketball reason behind durant’s white lie. “but really, i’ve always thought it was cool to say i’m a 6-9 small forward. really, that’s the prototypical size for a small forward. anything taller than that, and they’ll start saying, ‘ah, he’s a power forward.’ ”
white lie, similar to stretching the truth, means a little lie. durant’s justification is that if fans thought he was 7 feet tall, they would expect him to play in the post (close to the basket) as a power forward, but his game is to get the ball more often on the perimiter (away from the basket); more typical of a small forward.
