present perfect continuous in song

a few months ago, my friend nadya from edufire requested a blog entry for songs conatining the present perfect continuous structure.  great idea!!

fun english practice :) subscribe to the richyrocks english youtube channel

present perfect continuous is used to  indicate something happening from a point in the past until the present.  it is often used with since, to refer to a specific point in the past; or for, to refer to duration.

the phil collins song in the air tonight appeared in two different miami vice episodes, including the pílot.  right after the unmistakeable drum solo around 2:40 the lyrics are

i can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh lord

and i’ve been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh lord

stevie wonder‘s song that girl has these lyrics at 2:05

I’ve been hurting for a long time
And you’ve been playing for a long time
You know it’s true
I’ve been holding for a long time
And you’ve been running for a long time
It’s time to do what we have to do

and then at 3:30

She says her love has been crying out
But her lover hasn’t heard
But what she doesn’t realize is that I’ve listened to every word

the 2007 disney movie enchanted opens with the song true love’s kiss.

the chorus appears for the  first time at :30 and includes the lyric

i’ve been waiting for a true love’s kiss

ball and chain by social distortion (my favorite on this list, btw) at 3:00 says

well, i passed a bar on the way to my dingy hotel room

i spent all my money, i been drinkin since half past noon

the chorus of rasmus‘ song in the shadows is

I’ve been watching
I’ve been waiting
In the shadows all my time
I’ve been searching
I’ve been living
For tomorrows all my life

which song is your favorite?

I’ve been looking for the song on PPC for ages! Thanks a million =))).

I have been using ‘Have you Ever Seen The Rain’ for a long time on teaching the Present Perfect Simple. It’s a very old song. I need some new stuff I think. Could you help?

    • richyrocks says:

indeed i will post some present perfect simple songs soon. i love “have u ever seen the rain?”

“ball and chain” is an expression used by a man to refer to his wife. usually as a joke, but also to compare her to a heavy weight around the ankle.

in the social distortion song, though, i see “ball and chain” as more broadly representing the responsibilities our society demands. the second verse is about failed efforts at conformity.

which song do u like best of these 5?

  2. Nadia says:

by the way, which ball and chain does he ask to take away in the ‘Social Distortion’ song?

also Van Morrison’s “Someone like you” has lots of present perfect continuous
I’ve been searching a long time
    For someone exactly like you
I’ve been traveling all around the world
Waiting for you to come through.
    Someone like you makes it
    All worth while
Someone like you keeps me satisfied.
    Someone exactly like you.

I’ve been travelin’ a hard road
Lookin’ for someone exactly like you
I’ve been carryin’ my heavy load
Waiting for the light to come shining through.
Someone like you makes it all worth while
Someone like you keeps me satisfied.
    Someone exactly like you.

I’ve been doin’ some soul searching
To find out where you’re at
I’ve been up and down the highway
In all kinds of foreign lands
Someone like you makes it all worth while
Someone like you keeps me satisfied.
    Someone exactly like you.
I’ve been all around the world
Marching to the beat of a different drum.
But just lately I have realized
The best is yet to come.
Someone like you makes it all worth while
Someone like you keeps me satisfied.
    Someone exactly like you.
